This paper presents a theoretical discussion about the use of Frame Semantics as corpora annotation paradigm. The objective of this paper is to evaluate the applicability of Frame Semantics theory and FrameNet paradigm for the semantic annotation of legal texts. The work presented in this paper is an initial step in the construction of a treebank for the Brazilian legal language.
The research reported here results from a master's thesis project developed in the scope of SEMANTEC, DIRPI and LOIS projects. The aim of our research was to show what kind of semantic information was carried by adjectives and how this information could improve legal ontologies and legal information retrieval. In this paper we will discuss the main results related to the development of this research. We combine different linguistic theories to approach adjectival semantics. As result of this research, we propose five different adjectival groups. Each group has a specific semantic behavior and can contribute in different ways to legal information retrieval.International Conference on Semantic Computing 0-7695-2997-6/07 $25.00
The goal of this paper is to apply the linear and nonlinear error correction model to supply and demand for rubber exports and find elasticities to several variables. Two major contributions emerge from this research. The first is the use of the methodology of Markovian Switching model. The second is related to the results for the sector. For the supply curve is not possible to affirm the existence of the J effect. There is evidence of asymmetry in performance between states of retraction and growth in demand for exports, as well as between the duration of these states. This may reflect the influence of short-term elasticities, particularly in the case of income and prices. Overall, the results show that negative shocks have much more power to destabilize the exports sector in Brazil than positive shocks
Adjectival Semantics and the Legal Domain: a study for ontology improvement Inteligencia Artificial. Revista Iberoamericana de Inteligencia Artificial, vol. 11, núm. 36, 2007, pp. 19-26 Asociación Española para la Inteligencia Artificial Valencia, España AbstractThis paper carries out a descriptive study on Portuguese adjectives. Our aim is to describe the semantics of the legal domain adjectives in order to construct an ontology which may improve Information Retrieval Systems. For this, we present an approach based on valency and semantic relations. The ontology proposed here is a first step aiming to build a legal ontology based on top-level concepts.
ABSTRACTThis paper discusses the use of Frame Semantics for lexical meaning description in multilingual studies, especially to identify equivalents in different languages. The frames Self_motion and Criminal_process exemplify the use of Frame Semantics as a paradigm for multilingual studies. Concerning motion verbs, the polysemy of the verb to walk is expressed in Portuguese by a great variety of equivalents, such as: caminhar, andar and passear. This paper allies the lexicalization patterns study of Talmy (1985) to the FrameNet paradigm. In Portuguese, the number of verbs that conflate motion and manner in verb roots are lesser than in English, comparing those verbs that evoke Self_motion frame in FrameNet to their equivalents in Portuguese. In the case of lexical units of the legal domain, differences in cultural realities cause different levels of cross-lingual equivalence. Lexical units to charge in English and acusar in Portuguese are considered as equivalents. However, 1. UNISINOS (RS)/CNPq/Pq,
-This paper discusses the boundaries of Frame Semantics for multilingual lexicon development. This is a contrastive study of verbs of judgment in English and Brazilian Portuguese using the parallel corpus COMPARA. The contrastive analysis of four lexical units, to accuse, to blame, to criticize and to praise places emphasis on points to be developed in order to create multilingual frame-based databases that are able to describe lexical meaning more broadly. The discussion of translation equivalents is important not only for translation studies, but also for multilingual lexicon development. Finding a proper translation equivalent is the fi rst step in the development of multilingual resources. This paper explores the complex meaning networks existing between languages when they are compared.
