The aim of the present paper is to apply a Markov Switching model to check the characteristics of the Brazilian demand for imports equation based on annual data from 1947 to 2002 and on quarterly data from 1978:I to 2002:II. The results show that this model satisfactorily describes the structural and conjunctural characteristics of Brazilian foreign trade in the last decades. The long-term analysis, based on annual data, allowed for the identification of cyclic periods of trade closure and openness that coincide with the historical events of Brazilian economy. The conjunctural analysis, based on quarterly data, indicates different elasticities for a regime with rise and fall in imports.

Abstract: The objective of this study is to analyze the behavior of the Brazilian demand for rough and milled rice between January 1995 and June 2010. The main aim is to test the adequacy of linear and non-linear relations that represent short and long-term variables
This article aims to address the issues of Divergence and of distribution of the size of companies in Rio Grande do Sul uaing two methodologies. A comparison of industrial structure between different regions of the state, is made with the index of regional divergence proposed by Krugman (1997). The results show that, despite the trend of reducing disparities in industrial structure, this process is still slow and preserves the existence of strong Divergence. In relation to the size distribution of industries, the various functions of the estimated density indicates a non Gaussian distribution for employment. In addition, the results for the linear model proposed by Zipf (1949) indicate the existence of disparities in opportunity for growth between the sizes of companies. The nonlinear model proposed by Rosen et al. (1980), indicates a concavity function, revealing that the size of intermediary companies, small and medium, representing the dynamics of employment in the sector in the period of analysis.
The goal of this paper is to build leading indicators to predict the capital goods business cycle in Brazil. We propose a probit model with autoregressive dynamics consisting of series with predictive power to anticipate contractions in this sector. The model is especially suitable for this sector as it includes information about the characteristics of cycle phases and their duration in the estimation of recession probability, and adapts well to the high volatility of the capital goods business cycle. The results indicate that the dynamic probit model has a better forecasting performance than the simple probit model in several aspects, both within and out of sample and in real time.
