Arabic as a means of communication and the language of Islam, it is also an international language. Arabic has not yet become an official language for the Indonesian people, but it is one of the mandatory lessons for Islamic educational institutions. In line with that, this study aims to map students' experiences in learning Arabic. This study uses a qualitative method with the object of research being students of the Arabic language and literature study program. Students were interviewed privately and openly through a google form regarding their experiences in the process of learning Arabic. The findings of this study show that there are three kinds of challenges faced by students, namely challenges that come from internal language, challenges from students' internal self, and challenges from external. This study concludes that learning any language can't be separated from challenges, but the challenges of each individual experience differences and vary. In line with that there needs to be a solution from oneself (students) in facing these challenges.

Introduction. New digital technology in education and its constantly evolving paradigm have completely transformed the model of learning and the learning methods. E-learning has become an important tool for teaching and learning environments. Moreover, virtual learning has become a required alternative teaching method in educational system change during the COVID-19 pandemic, especially for learners in elementary schools.Aim. This research aimed to explore the necessities, lack, and want of learning English, which is done virtually at home.Methodology and research methods. This research employs descriptive methods using questionnaires and interviews as instruments to get responses from teachers and students about their learning needs. In the course of the needs analysis process, the importance and priority of teachers’ and students’ needs are discussed. The participants of this study were second-grade elementary school students, and the sample was 40 students and 2 English teachers for 10 months.Results. The research results demonstrate a gap between the needs of learners and current conditions; therefore, the whole language approach, the multimedia, and technology-based English teaching materials will become an inevitable need and even become a solution in the world of education.Scientific novelty. Further research is needed to study educational system change during the COVID-19 pandemic or after, especially in designing teaching materials in various disciplines and at different educational stages. Future studies could be generalised by these research findings to other populations in different learning contexts, and the findings presented in thisarticle should be further explored. In particular, technology-based and multimedia-based teaching materials must be explored more deeply. Furthermore, further research should focus on utilising a different model for needs analysis in language education to verify the need for effective English learning in changing the education system during the pandemic and after.Practical significance. It is thought that this study will contribute to the stakeholders in terms to provide empirical evidence of what necessities, lack, and want should be considered when a teacher will design and develop teaching materials during the COVID-19 period or afte.

Teachers’ Perceptions in the Implementation of Text-Based Learning in Indonesian Secondary Education

This study aimed to uncover the new evidence on how reform works based on Indonesian experience of adopting a text-based learning (TBL) approach in differing perceptions and teacher activities at the beginning of curriculum implementation. The secondary schools in Makassar city were used as the case studies while the study design had two questions. Data collection was conducted in two parts, A and B, which dealt with teachers' perceptions of TBL and the involvement at the beginning of its implementation, respectively. The samplecomprised 46 secondary school teachers from Makassar city, including 33 civil servants and 13 non-civil servants. These individuals had various teaching experiences in four categories, including 1 year or less, and more than 1 to 5, more than 5 to 10, and more than 10. Moreover, the collected data were analyzed using descriptive statistics. The results showed that the teacher's proportion with the same TBL perception in various aspects ranged from half to all. The proportion with the same activity was less than half of their number to nearly all of them. Generally, Indonesian secondary school teachers responded positively towardstext-based learning implementation.
