Objective: to identify the driving and restrictive forces involved in the maternity process for newborns hospitalized in a neonatal intensive care unit.Method: descriptive and exploratory research, with a qualitative approach, which uses the Force Field Theory as a reference. Ten mothers participated. Data were collected from September to December 2014, through a semi-structured interview, and submitted to content analysis.Results: effective communication, inclusion of the family in care, teamwork, learning and adequate physical space served as forces that fostered mothering. Authoritative behaviors, stigmas related to the neonatal intensive care unit, lack of specialized care, failure to perform care for the newborn, physical fatigue, emotional stress and changes in the daily routine acted as forces that restricted the mothering process.Conclusion: identifying the field of forces made it possible to understand factors and situations that influence mothering and to diagnose the true biopsychosocial demands of mothers of hospitalized newborns. Resultados: comunicación efectiva, inclusión de la familia en el cuidado, trabajo en equipo, aprendizaje y espacio físico adecuado actuaron como fuerzas que impulsaron la maternidad. Las conductas autoritarias, estigmas relacionadas con la unidad de terapia intensiva neonatal, falta de asistencia especializada, no realizar cuidados al recién nacido, cansancio físico, estrés emocional y cambios en la rutina diaria actuaron como fuerzas que restringieron la maternidad. DESCRIPTORS:Conclusión: identificar el campo de fuerzas posibilitó comprender factores y situaciones que influencian la maternidad y diagnosticar las verdaderas demandas biopsicosociales de las madres de los recién nacidos hospitalizados.DESCRIPTORES: Niño hospitalizado. RESUMO: Objetivo: compreender as reações das crianças hospitalizadas e de suas famílias ao ouvirem histórias infantis durante a execução do projeto de extensão e pesquisa: "Contos infantojuvenis: uma interface com a humanização do cuidado na hospitalização". Método: estudo descritivo e qualitativo usando o método observacional. Participaram do estudo 12 crianças hospitalizadas e suas famílias. Os dados foram coletados por meio da observação participante e registros de campo; em seguida, foram analisados fazendo emergir três categorias. Resultados: houve a evidência de que as crianças apresentam diferentes reações ao ouvir as histórias como mudança no humor, na postura corporal e facial. Além disso, notou-se que a família da criança hospitalizada valoriza essa prática lúdica como um momento de alegria e entusiasmo. Conclusões: o estudo revela a necessidade de práticas lúdicas que humanizem o ambiente pediátrico e auxiliem a criança e sua família na hospitalização. Objectives: To analyze the apprehension of hospital culture by mothers/companions of children with cancer and discuss the construction of symbolic systems by mothers and their implications for the practice of pediatric nursing. Methods: This is a qualitative study. Twelve mothers who accompanied their children with cancer admitted to the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit participated in the non-directive group interviews. The theoretical framework is linked to the concept of culture by Clifford Geertz.The data collected were submitted to thematic analysis. Results: Mothers establish interaction in the hospital, acquire technical knowledge and scientific terminologies and apprehend the care recover their autonomy with the hospitalized child. They build significant symbols such as: leadership, decision making and search for information. Conclusion: Cancer makes mothers/ companions strong enough to create symbolic systems that help them survive in the hospital environment. Métodos: Estudio cualitativo. Doce madres que acompañaban a sus niños hospitalizados en la Unidad de Cuidados Intensivos Pediátrica participaron de la entrevista no directiva de grupo. El marco teórico se vincula con el concepto de cultura de Clifford Geertz y los datos fueron sometidos al análisis temático. Resultados: Las madres establecen la interacción en el hospital, adquieren conocimientos técnicos y terminologías científicas y aprehenden los cuidados, rescatando su autonomía con los niños. Construyen símbolos significativos como: liderazgo, toma de decisiones y la búsqueda de información. Conclusión: El cáncer hace que las madres/cuidadores queden suficientemente fuertes para crear los sistemas simbólicos que ayudan a sobrevivir en el entorno hospitalario. El personal de enfermería debe ayudar estas madres a rescatar su autonomía.
