Mechanical properties and environmental stress cracking resistance of rubber toughened polyester/kenaf composite

Abstract: Abstract. In this study rubber-toughened polyester-kenaf fibre composites were prepared by adding various percentages of kenaf fibre in unsaturated polyester resin and subsequently cross linked using a mixture of organic peroxide methyl ethyl ketone and cobalt octanoate. Three percent (3%) of liquid natural rubber (LNR) were added as a toughening agent. The mechanical properties of the composites were evaluated by impact and flexural testing. Environmental stress cracking resistance (ESCR) of polyester-kenaf c… Show more

“…Following thorough hand mixing for 10 min, vacuum degassing was again carried out for 10 minutes. The resin was poured into silicone moulds (without any release agent) and cured at room temperature for 24 h followed by post-curing at 80 o C for 2 hours to ensure completion of the crosslinking [5,28]. In this research, four different samples were produced; monolithic polyester, 0.05 wt% HNT-0.05 wt% MLG, 0.1 wt% HNT and 0.1 wt% MLG.…”

“…Malaysia was used in this research. Crosslink was initiated by adding 1% of cobalt octanoate and methyl ethyl ketone peroxide (MEKP) catalyst to the resin-clay mixture at room temperature as recommended by the manufacturer [7]. Natural montmorillonite Cloisite® 30B (C30B), a natural montmorillonite modified with methyl tallow bis-2-hydroxyethyl quarternary ammonium salt (chloride) supplied from Southern Clay Products.…”
