Mechanical and Morphological Properties of Nano Filler Polyester Composites

Abstract: Abstract. This research is focusing on mechanical and morphological properties of unsaturated polyester (UP) reinforced with two different types of filler which is nano size clay Cloisite 30B (C30B) and Carbon Black (CB). Samples were fabricated via hand lay-up and open molding technique. Percentages of Cloisite 30B & Carbon Black (CB) used vary from 0, 2, 4, 6, 8 and 10 wt%. The mechanical properties were evaluated by impact, flexural and hardness testing. Result shows that the mechanical strength of C30B was… Show more

“…Nano-particles are currently recognized as highly promising fillers for enhancing the mechanical and physical properties of composite materials [100]. The incorporation of hydrophilic clay minerals into hydrophobic polymers can enhance their mechanical performance, fire retardant, and barrier resistance, as well as their thermal and electrical conductivities [101]. Adding nanoclay particles below or above their optimum point reduces material performance by introducing voids that act as preferential locations for crack initiation and failure [102].…”

“…There are other studies developed on synthetic fibers as that of Bonnia et al [12], who investigated the morphological and mechanical properties of unsaturated polyester (UP) reinforced with two types of fillers which are carbon black and Cloisite 30B nano-sized clay. From this research, the flexural strength of CB/UP and C30B/UP in 4 wt% was 76.59 MPa and 90.85 MPa, and the addition of fillers improved the strength of unsaturated polyester composites, from SEM micrographs Cloisite 30B improved the performance of the composite.…”
