Initial Evidence of the Reliability and Validity of a Three-Dimensional Body Rating Scale for the Congenitally Blind

Abstract: Research on body dissatisfaction has grown significantly. However, valid and reliable instruments for measuring body dissatisfaction in the congenitally blind have yet to be developed. In three studies, we report on development, test-retest reliability, and concurrent and content validity of the Three-dimensional Body Rating Scale (3BRS) for the congenitally blind. In Study 1, 58 people with congenital blindness (28 women, 30 men; M age = 36.7, SD = 13.1) numerically ordered models of the 3BRS and models of th… Show more

“…In that light, it is very important not only to refine the methodological apparatus used for evaluation but also to assess psychometric qualities of any tool (Gardner & Brown, 2011). The results of this study support the validity and temporal stability of the BPFRS (Agresti, 2013;Anastasi & Urbina, 2000;Pasquali, 2003) with findings that are in line with other studies in the area (Adami et al, 2012;Conti et al, 2013;Gardner & Brown, 2010a;Gardner, Jappe, & Gardner, 2009;Morgado, Ferreira, Campana, Rigby, & Tavares, 2013;Swami et al, 2008). Specifically, content validation was supported by over 70% agreement among the expert judges that each element of the scale was relevant and representative for the construct to be evaluated.…”

“…The second limitation was the lack of the use of a validated scale to assess the main variable used to check the convergent validity for body satisfaction. Although there is a valid and reliable Brazilian measure for body satisfaction in blind people (Three-Dimensional Body Rating Scale (3BRS) [67] ), it was validated for congenitally blind women, and would not be suitable for men or for people who became blind after the age of five, as in the case of some members of this sample. Similarly, another limitation was that no validated scale was used to assess the acceptance of the visual impairment variable for convergent validity.…”
