Comparison of three different thermometers in evaluating the body temperature of healthy young adult individuals

Abstract: The aim of this study was to compare the measurement values obtained with a non-contact infrared thermometer, a tympanic thermometer and a chemical dot thermometer. The research population was composed of students studying in two departments of a university in Ankara. A total of 452 students who fit the inclusion criteria of the study and volunteered to participate were included in the sample. Body temperature measurements with different thermometers were performed by the same researcher at the same room tempe… Show more

“…Numerous thermometers are available performing similar roles, and as such the standardisation of device usage and reporting is poor. The literature is supportive of the use of tympanic thermometry10 11 and suggests that infrared skin scanning thermometers are less reliable 12. In the adult population, the ability to accurately estimate core temperature is demonstrated by these devices, although there is unsatisfactory agreement when comparing them against each other 13…”

“…Currently, different forms of temperature measurement are available which can indicate core or peripheral temperature, as well as instruments that provide core temperature measurements, meaning those that indicate the temperature of the carotid artery blood supply, being responsible for the blood supply to the organism's thermoregulatory center (the hypothalamus) (4,7) . In general, methods that indicate core body temperature are invasive, and for this reason they are associated with a greater number of complications and/or infectious problems (7) .…”

“…In general, methods that indicate core body temperature are invasive, and for this reason they are associated with a greater number of complications and/or infectious problems (7) . Thus, non-invasive measures are expected to be able to provide reliable and safe measurements of the patient's body temperature.…”
