“…This finding agrees with most of the literature, which presents that the liquid class, because of its acoustic and articulatory characteristics, presents late acquisition 19,21,22,29,30 , commonly impaired in atypical phonological development 25,26,29,31 . In typical speech data, it is verified that the lateral liquids emerge first, followed by the non laterals.…”

“…Social factors can influence the acquisition of phonological skills, and as such, preventive measures and interventions to identify and treat phonological disorders must consider the effects of socioeconomic differences (19) . All aforementioned studies recruited participants from public schools only (8,14,(16)(17)(18)(19)(20)25) . In the present study, phonological impairments were more frequent in males than females.…”

“…Prevalence rates for different illnesses at a certain point in time are often calculated in the context of health care (15) . However, few studies to date (8,14,(16)(17)(18)(19)(20)(21)(22) have sought to analyze the occurrence of phonological disorders in Brazilian children. Although some of these studies were conducted in recent years, they vary widely in terms of their methods, sample sizes (where larger samples indicate greater reliability), and geographical coverage.…”

“…These occurrences appear in cases children cannot perform certain phones by several reasons, illustrating that their knowledge of the linguistical rules is still reduced. In the moment children perceive production difficulties, of one or more phonemes, they can omit or not perform the segment, what makes their speech even more unintelligible by the listener 2,7,8 . Considering the damage in speech intelligibility caused by omission and the possible negative consequences of that alteration in the phonological awareness skills and writing acquisition, the purpose of this study is to verify in the general phonological system which phones are omitted, in the simple onset position, by children with phonological disorders, according to age group and severity of the phonological disorder.…”
