Brazil is one of the main users of chemical pesticides in the world. These products threaten human and environmental health, and many of them are prohibited in countries other than Brazil. This paradigm exists in contrast with worldwide efforts to make the need for food production compatible with biodiversity conservation, preservation of ecosystem services, and human health. In this scenario, the development of sustainable methods for crop production and pest management such as organic agriculture and biological control are necessary. Herein, we describe how the process of registration of natural enemy-based products in organic agriculture is simpler and faster than the conventional route of chemical insecticides and can favor the development of the biological control market in Brazil. Since the regulatory mechanisms have been established in Brazil for organic agriculture, the number of biological control products registered has increased exponentially. Today, 50 companies and associations are marketing 16 species/isolates and 95 natural enemy-based products. Although this scenario presents a series of new opportunities to increase and stimulate a more sustainable agriculture in the country, biological control is not always aligned with the aims and philosophy of organic agriculture and agroecology. Therefore, we also argue that new research efforts are needed on understanding how conservation biological control strategies can be integrated with augmentation biological control to promote a sustainable agriculture under the concepts of organic agriculture and agroecology.

Iniciativas para fomentar a transição agroecológica e orgânica tem despertado o interesse de gestores público ao redor do mundo, e políticas para promover sua adoção têm sido implementadas. Entretanto, pesquisas avaliando a efetividade destas políticas ainda são raras. Com o objetivo de compreender o papel que políticas baseadas em compras públicas e incentivas de preços têm em territorializar sistemas de produção orgânicos/agroecológicos, avaliamos o Programa de Aquisição de Alimentos (PAA) em 15 municípios que compõem o Território Sudoeste Paulista. Os resultados sugerem que a criação de mercados institucionais baseados em compras públicas oferece incentivos insuficientes para territorializar processos de transição orgânica/agroecológica entre os agricultores camponeses e familiares. Concluímos apontando para a importância da organização social dos agricultores nos processos de territorialização de práticas de produção sustentáveis, bem como para a necessidade de conjugar as compras públicas com outras iniciativas, como subsídios para transição, créditos e extensão rural.

Institutionalizing Agroecology in France: Social Circulation Changes the Meaning of an Idea

Agroecology has come a long way. In the past ten years, it has reappeared in France throughout the agricultural sector and is now included in public and private strategies and in supportive policies, with collateral interest effects. Is a new "agro-revolution" taking place? To address this issue, using a methodology mixing hyperlink mapping and textual corpora analysis, we focus here on the trajectory of agroecology in various worlds: that of academia, social movements, non-governmental organizations (NGOs) that promote international solidarity, research and training institutions and public policies. This trajectory intertwines actors and time lines, with periods in which certain actors play a specific role, and others in which interactions between actors are dominant in terms of coalition advocacy. Some actors play a major role in circulating agroecology as they belong to several different social worlds (e.g., academia and NGO), present high occupational mobility (from politician to scientist and vice versa), are charismatic or have an irradiating aura in the media, and can articulate and circulate ideas between different social arenas (including between countries). The stabilization of networks of actors is interpreted as the institutionalization of agroecology, both within social movements as well as because of its integration into a policy aimed at an ecological modernization of agriculture. The international positioning of many actors anchors national and regional initiatives more strongly. It is also a prerequisite for the amplification and development of agroecology.
