Many manufacturing cost reduction initiatives have been introduced over past three decades including lean manufacturing. Waste reduction and efficiency improvement are the main objectives of this initiative. It is developed from a set of tools and techniques and can fit nicely in cost focus or cost leadership competitive advantage strategies. But, keeping competitive advantage under the market circumstances are getting harder with growth of production quantity and product diversity. Therefore, paper's focus is lean manufacturing implementation trends and issues within the various manufacturing sector. Successes and failures of implementation of lean manufacturing in some industries are discussed. It was found that lean principles are good source of competitive advantage, it is applicable for many industries and its expansion and discussion are significantly progressing. The biggest threat in implementing lean is lack of understanding the concept but those who engage consultants were more successful.

Since there is so much empirical research in the field of lean manufacturing, to provide a comprehensive overview of the literature on this subject, a bibliometric analysis was required. Through science mapping and multi-dimensional bibliometric analysis, this study aims to identify common themes in the most-cited research on lean manufacturing. A bibliometric analysis was conducted using VOSviewer, including keyword occurrence, co-authorship network, and bibliometric coupling network analyses. From the 4,648 results in the SCOPUS database search, the 100 most-cited articles were analyzed. The analysis found four research clusters: “lean manufacturing,” “productivity,” “manufacture,” and “value stream mapping.” It was also found that most of the most-cited papers came from journals with a Q1 ranking. Based on these results, scholars work to learn as much as they can about the field. The results are important to researchers because they show how far the research on lean manufacturing has come. As far as the author knows, no other study has been done on bibliometric analysis of the topic. By making a scientific map of what is known about lean manufacturing, this study adds to what is already known.

Getting a competitive advantage is the challenge in the current context for companies. Thus, to achieve this result it is necessary to add value to the product or service. This ends up reflecting the way the transforming resources are disposed in the production process, influencing the increase or not in productivity. Most micro and small companies do not have a good management plan, delaying improvements in their production processes, among them the best use of their physical spaces. It may seem simple, however, getting a best use of the space available for a production line ends up becoming a task that usually takes time and costs. Consequently, the main objective of this article is to present, through an on-site case study in a graphic micro-enterprise, a proposal to improve the paper bag production process, allowing for a better reuse of manufacturing flows and reducing the movement of people, products and materials.
