Indonesia has a variety of traditional foods that come from different social and cultural communities. One of the tribes in North Sumatra is the Batak. In the Toba Batak community, there is a belief or religion system called Parmalim. The Parmalim community is one of the indigenous faiths in Batak, which has grown and developed over time and is embraced by the Batak. The existence of traditional food known as Hare is one of the community's traditions. The purpose of this study is to describe how Hare was made, the ingredients included, and the nature of the benefits through an ethnobotanical study. The traditional botanical knowledge was traced through a series of field observations and semi-structured interviews with eight respondents from the religious officials and experts in Parmalim using a purposive sampling technique. Based on the interviews, Hare was prepared from herbs, honey, buffalo milk, and chicken eggs. The total ingredients used in making hare were 16 ingredients consisting of 13 species of plants and three species of animals. Hare is prepared from cultivated plants such as Cocos nucifera, Citrullus lanatus, Cucumis sativus, Artocarpus heterophyllus, Musa acuminata, Oryza sativa, Kaempferia galanga, and Curcuma domestica Valeton) and wild plants such as Saurauia bracteosa, Neptunia oleracea, Desmodium adscendens, Hibiscus mutabilis, and Chrysophyllum roxburghii. At first, hare is thought to be a nutritious diet and a pregnancy stimulant for young pregnant women. Recently, the traditional dish must be preserved, one of which is by promoting this dish on the cultural and formal agenda at Toba District, North Sumatra.

The habitat of endophytic bacteria in plant tissues making it automatically used by plants to protect themselves against pathogenic bacteria. Endophytic bacteria have been applied in various fields, including agriculture, pharmacy, medicine, and biotechnology. This review was carried out to summarize recent studies focusing on the diversity of endophytic bacteria derived from traditional medicinal plants which have antibacterial activity and extracellular enzymes. This article was prepared and written by referring to literature studies collected from books and online journal publication. The literature review of endophytic bacteria focused on Vernonia anthelmintic, Saurauia scaberrinae, and Ki rinyuh (Chromolaena odorata) plants. The results revealed that endophytic bacteria obtained from Vernonia anthelmintic plant is from Micrococcus, Bacillus, Pseudomonas, Stenotrophomonas, and Pantoea genus which possess the same biological properties as the host plant, producing antibacterial activity. Saurauia scaberrinae plant successfully isolated endophyte fungus Phoma sp. which produces phomodione (4) and cercosporamide. Phomodione (4) exhibit inhibitory activity against S. aureus, P. ultimum, S. sclerotiorum and R. solani. Cercosporamide exhibits inhibitory activity against S. aureus. Endophytic bacteria were also isolated from Ki rinyuh (Chromolaena odorata), including BECB3, BECB 4, BECA 8, BECA 5, BECA 1, and BECA 10 isolates which have extracellular enzyme activities such as β-amylase, α-amylase, cellulase, chitinase, and protease. Understanding endophytic bacteria in medicinal plants can help researchers apply them effectively.

Understanding the species distribution patterns of endemic and threatened species is very useful for conservation planning and actions. However, research on the distribution of many important and often overlooked species in the country, such as the Saurauia, is extremely limited. This paper provided an overview of the distribution patterns of Saurauia species across the Philippine archipelago based solely on the existing digital checklist of vascular plants. Specifically, the study produced distribution maps of the 56 endemic Saurauia species and determined their climatic distribution ranges. The methods involved geospatial and geoprocessing analysis in a geographic information system (GIS) environment. The findings showed that 29 Saurauia species are currently distributed in a single province, whereas seven (7) species have only been recorded in a certain region. Furthermore, 35 species was found to have a single type of climate. The Saurauia species identified in this paper that have only a single provincial or regional distribution record and are restricted to a single type of climate are recommended for conservation because they are mostly likely to be affected by environmental and climatic changes. Finally, the information and data derived in this paper could serve as a baseline for assessing conservation status, habitat modelling studies, species-level conservation planning, and understanding climate change impacts.
