The production of compact plants, which are slightly lacking in vigor and as productive as conventionally sized plants, is a trend in fruit growing. The objective of this study was to evaluate the vegetative performance and fruit quality of Gulfblaze and Reubennel plums intergrafted into two peach genotypes (UFV 186 and UFV 286). The experiment was arranged in a randomized block design using a 3x2 factorial arrangement (interstocks x cultivar) with four replications and one plant per plot. The non-intergrafted treatment was considered the control. Ten fruits were collected per plot for physical and chemical analyses. The evaluations were performed in the years 2014 and 2015. The interstock UFV 286 produced Gulfblaze trees with lower height in the two years of evaluation. When using the UFV 286 interstock, the trunk diameters were 50.2% smaller in Gulfblaze and 44.25% smaller in Reubennel than the control cultivars. Intergrafting had no influence on the fruit mass of Reubennel. In general, the peach genotypes UFV 186 and UFV 286 can be recommended as interstocks for reducing plant size in the plums studied. Intergrafting had no effect on fruit quality of Reubennel plums.

Advances in the production of temperate fruits in the tropics

The present study aimed to review the advances in the production of temperate fruits to determine future research directions that improve production in the tropics. Temperate fruits are no longer only produced in regions characterized by a cold winter period. These fruits are also produced in the sub-tropical and tropical regions characterized by mild winter or even the absence of chilling conditions often required by the tree to break dormancy. Currently, temperate fruit production is possible in certain regions of South America, Africa and Asia that are near to the Equator. However, temperate tree fruit production in tropical regions requires modified techniques to overcome dormancy and allow adequate flowering, growth and productivity. The main approaches taken are the development of cultivars with low chilling requirement, chemical induction of budbreak, interruption of irrigation during the winter period, defoliation, orchard densification, and double pruning. Breeding has become a key tool in the advancement of temperate fruit growing in the tropics, especially with the development of low chilling requirement cultivars.

Geralmente as frutas apresentam características adequadas para produção de bebidas fermentadas, desta forma, esses produtos devem ser bastante pesquisados e incentivados. A maçã (Pyrus malus L.) e a amora preta (Rubus sp.) são frutas cultivadas em Palmas (PR) pelo seu ótimo desenvolvimento no frio. Assim, o objetivo deste trabalho foi produzir um fermentado misto de maçã e amora preta propondo então, uma nova possibilidade de renda para os produtores dessa região. Foram produzidos quatro fermentações para verificar a interação entre dois fatores o pH (3,5 e 3,9) e a temperatura (25 °C e 30 °C), utilizando um delineamento fatorial inteiramente casualisado, 22. Posteriormente foi quantificado seus compostos bioativos como as antocianinas, atividade antioxidante total e fenólicos totais e realizado algumas analises físico-químicas como o teor alcoólico, calorias, densidade e teor de sólidos solúveis utilizando o equipamento Alcolyzer Beer. E empregando o software “Statistica 10” foram obtidas a análise de variância, diagrama de Pareto e superfície de resposta, para todos os resultados obtidos. Desta forma foi possível observar que apenas as antocianinas tiveram diferença estatística, sendo que o parâmetro pH apresentou influência negativa na quantidade delas. Assim, se esse fermentado for reproduzido preferencialmente deverá ser realizada sua fermentação na temperatura de 30°C e pH inicial de 3,5 ou ligeiramente abaixo para manter as antocianinas no produto.
