This study aimed to evaluate the influence of concentrate supplementation on the ingestive behaviour of grazing ewes. Twelve pregnant pluriparous sheep were used, six of the Santa Inês breed and six of the Morada Nova breed. The supplement was formulated to supply the animals with two feed levels (0.5% and 1.5% of body weight) of nutrition. The experimental design was a randomized 2 x 2 x 2 factorial arrangement (two breeds, two supplementation levels and two feeding shifts, morning and afternoon) with six replicates per treatment, totalling 24 experimental units. Focal sampling was used to record the time spent on the adopted behaviour at 10-minute intervals for 10 continuous hours, with three replications, totalling 180 records per animal. Sampling started at 07:00. Time spent grazing, ruminating and resting did not correlate with the level of concentrate supplementation. It was expected that concentrate supplementation would reflect directly on forage intake owing to the substitution effect, which causes sheep where the supplement supplied a small proportion of net energy requirement, to have a greater grazing intensity. The two breeds differed in the time spent ruminating or lying, with the Santa Inês sheep spending more time in these activities. Greater intensity of grazing and ruminating occurred in the morning, which is directly related to the climatic conditions of the region. Time of day is a factor that imposes limitations on the feeding behaviour patterns of ewes that are supplemented on pasture.

ResumoObjetivou-se avaliar níveis crescentes de concentrado na dieta de cordeiros sobre o consumo e coeficiente de digestibilidade total (CD) dos nutrientes, características ruminais, temperatura corporal e retal. Foram utilizados quatro cordeiros sem raça definida (SRD), não castrados, com peso corporal (PC) médio de 19,3 Kg ± 2,07 por meio de um delineamento em quadrado latino 4 x 4. Os animais foram alojados em gaiolas de metabolismo, os quais foram alimentados duas vezes ao dia, com dieta composta por silagem de milho e concentrado, na proporção de 20, 40, 60 e 80% na matéria seca da dieta, as quais eram compostas por milho grão moído e farelo de soja. Diariamente as sobras foram monitoradas e as fezes foram coletadas por meio de sacolas de napa. Os dados das variáveis estudadas foram submetidos à ANOVA e análise de regressão a 5% de probabilidade. Os níveis crescentes de concentrado nas rações de cordeiros alteraram (P<0,05) de maneira linear decrescente o consumo de FDN e FDA e de forma quadrática o consumo de MS, MO, PB, EE, CHT e CNF. Não houve efeito (P>0,05) dos níveis de concentrado sobre o coeficiente de digestibilidade da MS, MO, EE, FDN, FDA, CHT e CNF. Entretanto, o coeficiente de digestibilidade da PB apresentou efeito quadrático (P<0,05). Os valores de pH e nitrogênio amoniacal apresentaram efeito quadrático (P<0,05) para o tempo após a alimentação. A temperatura corporal e retal dos cordeiros não foi influenciada (P>0,05) pelos níveis de concentrado na dieta. Conclui-se que 38% de concentrado nas rações de cordeiros favorece o máximo consumo de matéria seca, matéria orgânica e proteína bruta. O coeficiente de digestibilidade dos nutrientes, exceto para proteína bruta, não são alterados com a adição de até 80% de concentrado na dieta de cordeiros, bem como este não afeta o pH e a concentração de nitrogênio amoniacal do líquido ruminal, temperatura corporal e retal. ABSTRACT:The objective of this study was to evaluate the intake and apparent digestibility of nutrients, as well as the feeding behavior of sheep fed an exclusively corn silage diet (0%); this diet incorporated wet corn gluten feed (WCGF) in increments of 30%, 50%, 60%, and 90%, together with the profile of the particles of these silages. Five crossbreed sheep were used with an average weight of 40 kg; they were housed in metabolic cages and were arranged in a Latin square 5×5 experimental design. There was a quadratic effect on dry matter (DM) intake, with a maximum consumption of 1.75 kg/day -1 to an inclusion of 39.09% of WCGF. The crude protein (CP) consumption exhibited an ascending linear effect with the inclusion of the co-product, and fiber consumption in neutral detergent fiber (NDF) and acid detergent fiber decreased linearly with the inclusion of WCGF. The apparent digestibility of DM, CP, and NDF increased linearly with the increasing inclusion of co-product in corn silage. Rumination time, total chewing, and idleness were influenced by increases in the inclusion of WCGF in corn silage, and there was a decreasing linear effect on the amount of time spent ruminating and total chewing, as well as an increasing linear effect for idleness duration. The chewing time for bolus, the number of chews for bolus, and the number of chews per day were influenced by the inclusion of WCGF. Through the obtained results, especially the equation of DM intake, which estimated a maximum point of 39.09%, as well as the presence of diarrhea at levels up to 50%, it was concluded that the addition of up to 40% of WCGF in corn silage can be recommended as it improves nutrient intake and features good digestibility without negatively altering the normal behavior of sheep.
