The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of increasing levels of supplementation on body weight components of Nellore cattle grazing in Urochloa brizantha. Twenty-four steers with initial body weight (BW) of 371 ± 14 kg and average age of 26 months were used. Four animals were slaughtered at the beginning of the experiment as a reference and the others were distributed in 4 treatments [0.0% (mineral salt), 0.3%, 0.6% and 0.9% supplement BW]. The slaughter of the experimental group was performed when the animals reached 450 kg and the body weight components were weighed. Data were submitted to analysis of variance and regression. The increase in supplementation level reduced (p < 0.05) pasture dry matter intake, but did not influence (p > 0.05) on empty body weight (EBW) (380.3 kg) and cold carcass weight (CCW) (247.5 kg). The weights of skin, liver, rumen and fat were not influenced (p > 0.05) by supplementation level. The animals gained, on average, 75.3 kg EBW and 50.7 kg CCW, but the treatments did not influence (p > 0.05) the gains of body weight components. The increasing of energetic-protein supplement level for Nellore steers in Urochloa brizantha pasture does not affect carcass and non-carcass components.

ResumoAvaliaram-se os componentes externos e a distribuição da gordura interna de novilhos das raças Charolês (CH) ou Nelore (NE), alimentados com diferentes proporções de concentrado na dieta. Os novilhos foram distribuídos em seis tratamentos que corresponderam a três níveis de concentrado: 35, 50 e 65% (com base na matéria seca) e dois grupos genéticos (Charolês e Nelore). Os novilhos NE alimentados com 65% de concentrado na dieta apresentaram maior rendimento de corpo vazio (RCV), não diferindo dos novilhos CH e NE alimentados com 50% de concentrado. O peso da cabeça ajustado para peso de corpo vazio (PCV) foi menor para os animais que consumiram dieta com proporção mais alta de concentrado (4,67, 4,30 e 4,28 para 35, 50 e 65% de concentrado, respectivamente) e para os novilhos da raça NE em relação aos CH (4,30 contra 4,54, respectivamente). O peso absoluto total das gorduras internas foi superior (P<0,05) para os novilhos alimentados com proporções mais elevadas de concentrado (18,13; 22,58 e 21,74 kg para 35 50 e 65% de concentrado), e para os novilhos CH em relação aos NE (22,52 contra 19,11, respectivamente). Novilhos CH apresentam maior deposição de gordura interna do que novilhos NE. Novilhos alimentados com proporções mais altas de concentrado apresentam maiores deposições de gordura interna. The objective of this study was to develop statistical models to predict empty body weight (EBW) by body weight (BW), testing the influence of sex (females, intact males or castrated males), type of diet (suckling or postweaning), and genotype (Saanen, ½ Boer × ½ Saanen, ¾ Boer × ¼ Saanen, and Indigenous goats). Individual records of 311 goats combined from 10 studies, with BW ranging from 4.3 to 47.4 kg were used. The EBW was computed as the BW at slaughter minus the weight of the contents of the digestive tract, urinary bladder, and biliary vesicle. Linear regression analyses were performed to develop the models, considering sex, type of diet, and genotype as fixed effects and random effect of study. CONTRAST statements were used to conduct all pairwise comparisons of fixed effects and all the statistical analyses were performed using SAS. The present study revealed that sex did not affect both intercept (P = 0.53) and slope (P = 0.19). On the other hand, the EBW prediction was affected by type of diet (P < 0.01), and genotype (P = 0.02). Therefore, were proposed different equations to predict EBW from BW for suckling and post-weaning Saanen goats, where gastrointestinal tract content (g/kg EBW) in suckling goat kids increased as they grew, oppositely it remained slightly constant in postweaning goats. The effect of genotype on the EBW:BW relationship was tested considering only post-weaning goats, and one equation was proposed for each genotype. In general, gastrointestinal tract content (g/kg EBW) decreased as goat kids grew in all genotypes but Indigenous goats. The results also highlighted different gastrointestinal relative capacity between genotypes. The development of these equations would enable producers and researchers to predict the animal EBW, and develop strategic plans in a goat herd.
