The objective of this study was to select sorghum genotypes for silage production. The study was carried out at Embrapa Maize & Sorghum’s experimental field. Planting was performed in randomized blocks, with three replicates and the Scott-Knott test at a 5% probability level. The material was ensilaged in laboratory silos opened after 56 days for analysis concerning fermentation and bromatological composition. Only crude protein showed no significant difference (p > 0.05), with an overall mean of 8.88%. The other variables presented significant differences (p < 0.05): pH (3.34 to 3.94); Aw (0.93 to 0.98); N-NH 3/TN (1.61 to 6.56%); green matter yield (12.05 to 34.14 t ha-1); dry matter yield (6.19 to 11.42 t ha-1); dry matter (26.89 to 49.95%); ashes (4.08 to 6.88%); neutral detergent fiber corrected for ash and protein (47.67 to 65.79%); acid detergent fiber (16.62 to 35.89%); hemicellulose:cellulose (1.07 to 2.71%); lignin (2.03 to 6.52%), digestible dry matter yield (3.70 to 7.41 t ha-1) and dry matter digestibility (56.36 to 72.67%). Based on digestible dry matter yield, the genotypes: male 201191 and hybrids 2012F47484, 2012F47515 and 2012F47525 stood out in relation to the others for showing good yielding, adequate nutritional value, with low dry matter and NDF levels coupled with high digestibility values and good fermentation patterns of the silages.
Palavras-chave: digestão total, ingestão, novilhos, mestiços, nitrogênio não-protéico Effects of Feeding Dietary Urea Levels on Intake and Total Digestibility for Steers of Four Genetic GroupsABSTRACT -The effects of diet adaptation protocol by steers and of feeding four dietary urea levels (0, 0.65, 1.3, and 1.95%, dry matter -DM basis) on intake and total apparent digestibility of DM, organic matter (OM), crude protein (CP), ether extract (EE), total carbohydrates (CHO), neutral detergent fiber (NDF), nonfiber carbohydrates (NFC) and total digestible nutrients intake (TDN) for Holstein, ½ Holstein-Guzera, ½ Holstein-Gir and Zebu steers were evaluated in this trial. The animals were assigned to four 4x4 latin squares (genetic groups): four animals, four experimental periods and four treatments (diets). The animals were fed diets (12% CP, with increasing urea levels) with 50% tifton-85 bermudagrass hay and concentrate. The first experimental period lasted 19 days, 13 days for adaptation and 6 days for feces collection. The possibility of reducing diet adaptation in the subsequent periods was investigated by evaluating daily DM intake in the adaptation period. The indigestible acid detergent fiber (FDAi) was used as marker of fecal dry matter flow. The adaptation to diets of the subsequent experimental periods was reduced by 1...
Production of Piata grass under different phosphorus sources A B S T R A C TPhosphorus is essential for forage crops and fertilization combined with reactive and natural sources of phosphorus can increase the quality and yield of Piata grass. The objective of this study was to evaluate the production and the relationship between the components of Piata grass subjected to different combinations of reactive and rock phosphate. The experiment was conducted in a greenhouse in a randomized block design with seven replications. Treatments consisted of four combinations of sources and reactive phosphate rock (equivalent to 70 kg ha -1 of P 2 O 5 ): absence of phosphate fertilizer (control); fertilization with Algerian reactive rock phosphate; fertilization with 50% of Algerian reactive rock phosphate and 50% fertilization with single superphosphate and single superphosphate fertilization. The Piata grass was grown for three cuttings for characterization of dry matter production of tillers, leaves, pseudostem, relations between roots and leaf/pseudostem and shoot/root part. Phosphorus fertilization, regardless of the source, provided an increment in the production of dry matter of leaves, pseudostem and shoots of Piata grass in the second and third cuttings of evaluation and on the average, indicating increase in forage production. Palavras-chave: amônia ruminal, braquiária, efeito associativo, farelo de soja, suplementação protéica, pH ABSTRACT -The objective of this trial was to evaluate the effects of different levels of supplementation on dry matter intake and of ruminal pH and ammonia content of growing steers grazing Brachiaria brizantha, during the dry to rainy transition season, from April to June 2003. Five ruminally fistulated steers averaging 15 months old and initial weight of 271 kg were assigned to a 5x5 Latin square design. The treatments were as follows: control (mineral salt) and supplements fed at different levels (0.125, 0.25, 0.50, and 1.0% body weight/animal/day) and contained corn and soybean meal formulated to yield 24% crude protein. The voluntary intake was calculated by the relation between the amount of fecal dry matter excreted by using both external (chromium oxide) and internal (indigestible acid detergent fiber) markers. It was observed difference on dry matter forage intake by increasing the levels of supplementation. The control group showed higher dry matter intake (9.27 kg/day), with no difference among the supplementation levels. The most evident decrease of forage intake was observed at 1.0% BW (1.95% BW), wit...
