“…Since the period following military dictatorship in Brazil, societal transformation has intensified and young people who live in urban centers see consensual unions as a way to continue single life or construct an 'experimental marriage' (Berquó, 1998). Madalozzo (2008) used Current Population Survey (CPS) data from 1995, 1997, and 1999 about American women between 20 and 64 years of age and analyzed the wage differences between married and cohabiting women. Using switching regression methods and the Oaxaca decomposition, this study shows the existence of a financial penalty for married women.…”
