Forests worldwide are essential goods for humanity as they provide support, provision, regulation, and cultural ecosystem services. In Brazil, the Atlantic Forest has lost much of its original cover, is currently represented by relatively small fragments in an anthropized matrix. Therefore, it is very relevant to analyze if forest fragments change in related the fragmentation of the original native vegetation and how they maintain their quality. This study aimed to analyze whether patch-level metrics are related to forest quality (biotic integrity) and whether relief features such as headboards are related to forest fragmentation patterns to provide subsidies for public planning and environmental conservation policies. The methodology involved mapping forest fragments (F) and drainage headboards (DH), calculating patch-level metrics (AREA, SHAPE, PROX), and the biotic integrity (BII) of the forest. Spearman's Correlation Coefficient was used to test the relationship between variables. The results showed a significative robust relationship between AREA and BII and significative medium relationship between SHAPE and DH, confirming partially the initial assumptions of the research. We concluded that the integrity of the forest fragment and the presence of drainage headboards must be considered in public planning and environmental conservation policies.

Forest land provides several environmental services and goods with significant implications for different socioeconomic and environmental dimensions. Forestry and its management are determinant activities for sustainable development, specifically in the current context of urgent mitigation of climate change. In this perspective, one objective of this research was to survey the main insights from the literature about the forest and management dimensions put together, highlighting the contributions of these activities to mitigate climate change. Another objective was to explore indicators related to forest management (land, employment, output, and net emissions) in order to obtain a forest sustainability index through factor analysis. As main insights from this study, we can quote that the literature survey pinpoints the most relevant factors framing forest management: soil characteristics, ecology, ecosystems, biodiversity, deforestation, climate change, socioeconomic frameworks, local knowledge, public policies, institutional context, and new technologies. Forest indicators reveal a strong relationship between forest land, employment and output, and a weaker relation with net emissions. We concluded that there is a need for stakeholders to explore and improve the interlinkage with climate change impact, specifically with regard to improving the relationships of forestry greenhouse gas emissions impacts with forest size and output.

RESUMOO presente trabalho objetivou identificar as principais variáveis afetadas por fatores naturais e, ou, antrópicos, que influenciam a qualidade da água superficial em microbacias hidrográficas, manejadas para produção de madeira de eucalipto. A qualidade da água foi monitorada em quatro microbacias localizadas no município de Aracruz, norte do ES, Brasil. Para tanto, analisaram-se as características físicas e químicas, bem como a potencial presença na água de agrotóxicos utilizados no manejo florestal. As coletas foram realizadas após as atividades silviculturais e/ou ocorrência de chuvas entre os meses de janeiro e junho de 2012. Foram utilizadas técnicas de componentes principais e análise fatorial para determinar as variáveis mais sensíveis e correlacionadas com as atividades silviculturais e com as condições edafoclimáticas das microbacias. De forma geral, 4 componentes explicaram 73,1% da variância total. Os componentes foram correlacionados com as variáveis analisadas e definidos como fatores: mineral, sólido, acidez e pedológico. Estes fatores explicaram 31,6; 18,5; 15,6; e 7,4% da variância total dos dados e estão diretamente relacionados com a salinidade, a presença de sólidos suspensos, a acidez e o teor de carbono inorgânico do solo, respectivamente. Não foi observada presença dos agrotóxicos sulfluramida (inseticida) e glifosato (herbicida) em todas as avaliações realizadas. Em geral, é possível reduzir de 30 para 12 as variáveis que devem ser monitoradas para predição da qualidade da água, mantendo pelo menos 70% da precisão das estimativas.
