[1] This study analyzed how seasonal and interannual variations in climate alter litter dynamics, including production, decomposition, and accumulation. Monthly measurements of leaf, stem, and reproductive (flower plus fruit) litter and the forest floor litter mass were combined with a mass balance model to determine rates of litter decomposition for a semideciduous tropical forest located in the rain forest-savanna ecotone of the southern Amazon Basin for [2001][2002][2003][2004][2005][2006][2007]. Annual rates of litter production varied between 8 and 10.5 Mg ha À1 a À1 , and leaf litter production accounted for the majority ($70%) of the total litter production. Leaf litter production peaked at the end of the May-August dry season while stem litter production peaked during the wet season and reproductive litter production peaked during the dry-wet season transition. Forest floor litter mass ranged between 5 and 8 Mg ha À1 over the study period and generally declined as litter inputs declined. Litter decomposition rates were remarkably stable from year-toyear and varied between 10.8 and 12.4 Mg ha À1 a À1 . On average, rates of litter decomposition were highest during the dry-wet season transition. Overall, our results suggest that rainfall variability directly altered litter production dynamics and indirectly altered forest floor litter mass and decomposition kinetics through its effect on litter production. Future changes in seasonal and/or interannual rainfall patterns, whether in response to El Niño or to anthropogenic climate change, will likely have important consequences for the litter dynamics of Amazonian semideciduous forest.
Analysis of evapotranspiration by Morlet wavelet in area of Vochysia divergens Pohl in Pantanal A B S T R A C TThe temporal-spatial variation of evapotranspiration was analysed using Morlet wavelet in a forest of Vochysia divergens Pohl (locally known as Cambarazal) in Pantanal wetland in Mato Grosso state, Brazil. This area is inserted within the physiographic plain of the Pantanal and is seasonally flooded. The net radiation, solar global radiation, air temperature, and relative humidity data were collected by sensors installed in a micrometeorological tower. The daily analysis of time series by Morlet wavelet for evapotranspiration was satisfactory enabling better understanding of the dynamics of evapotranspiration in wetland and its relation to the air temperature, relative humidity, and solar radiation. It is concluded that during the wet season the highest values of evapotranspiration and higher intensity in the high frequency occured probably due to increased availability of water as a function of rainfall and flooding, and solar radiation. Macro-nutrients in the water sheet in Mature Forest, Management Forest and Pasture in the north of Mato Grosso ABSTRACTForest removal for other land uses has been a constant in the north of Mato Grosso and can alter the hydrological and biochemical cycles. In this context, the present work aims to identify the variation of phosphorus and nitrogen in the water sheet in areas of Mature Forest, Management Forest and Pasture in the north of Mato Grosso. The water level was measured monthly and water samples for analysis were collected monthly from January/2005 to November/2006. We verified the precipitation and the air temperature seasonality, and in the dry season the quality of the water sheet presented greater values of total phosphorus and total Kjeldhal nitrogen in the studied areas. The phosphorus and nitrogen presented greater values in forest ecosystems (Forest and Management Forest) as indicative of the function of the vegetal covering in the nutrient cycle.
Soils have important roles in the global budgets of the greenhouse gases. The liquid pig slurry (LPS) in pastures has high potential as a fertilizer but could have a direct influence on emission of greenhouse gasses. This study evaluated the effects of the application of LPS and inorganic mineral fertilization during the rainy and dry seasons on the emissions of CO2, CH4 and N2O in pastures planted with Tifton-85. The following treatments were tested: Control - no fertilization; LPS30 - 30 m3 ha-1; LPS60 - 60 m3 ha-1; LPS90 - 90 m3 ha-1 and inorganic mineral fertilization. Gasses were sampled using static chambers first during the months of March and April, then in June and July. Fertilization with LPS caused an increase in the flux of CO2 and CH4 during the first hours after its application, and CO2 emissions are greater during the rainy than in the dry season. However, the application of LPS in Tifton-85 pasture during rainy periods did not show high potential for emission of CO2, in contrast to application during the dry season. Fertilization with LPS increases the emission of N2O, and this varies as a function of the volume of LPS applied and the experimental conditions experimental conditions. The application of LPS in Tifton-85 pasture has a high potential for N2O emission during the rainy season, but the magnitude is similar to that resulting from inorganic mineral fertilization.
