The impact of agriculture trade and exchange rate on economic growth of Pakistan: an NARDL and asymmetric analysis approach

Abstract: This study contributes to the extant literature on the nexus among agriculture export, import exchange rate and economic growth in Pakistan. We used annual time series data for 1980-2017 and employ the Non-linear Autoregressive Distributed Lag (NARDL) model. The NARDL testing results affirms asymmetric co-integration among the variables. The study main results show: (i) Co-integration test for long run the positive shocks in export and import have positive significant while exchange rate has positive effect th… Show more

“…Foreign trade is a significant determinant of the economic growth in developing countries including Nigeria (ATIF et al, 2016;ALI et al, 2020). Agricultural exports are likely to have a positive impact on the economy of a developing nation (SHAFIULLAH et al, 2017).…”

“…It is defined as the lack of water in the soil to meet the needs of the plant and occurs when there is moisture loss and a scarcity of water resources [21]. The first effects of drought, which is a slowly developing natural disaster, are seen in the agricultural sector [23], which is crucial in every country to ensure food security, the provision of raw materials to other sectors, employment, and rural development [24][25][26]. Due to the nature of drought, even if it occurs in one region, its effects can creep into other areas and be long-lasting, and it is quite complex to manage due to the uncertainty of the start and end dates [21,23,27,28].…”

“…The formation of analytical approaches in these areas received more attention from foreign scientists, some of whom used standard software products for complex economic analysis. In particular, the NARDL package is popular in its direct ISSN 2414-584X use (Karamelikli and Korkmaz, 2016;Falco et al, 2020), or with some modifications and improvements (Khan et al, 2020;He et al, 2019). Sometimes this is due to the target setting.…”

“…Sometimes this is due to the target setting. For example, big data made it difficult to study (Khan et al, 2020;Kirieieva et al, 2019) by time series. But the nonlinear method applied to the autoregression of the distributed lag made it possible to detect unexpected asymmetric results on model variables (Khan et al, 2020;Fenghe, 2020).…”
