Community-based interventions to increase dairy intake in healthy populations: a systematic review

Background: Considering the low frequency of dairy intake in the population, interventions aiming to increase its consumption can be a priority for any health system. Objective: This study aims to summarize community-based interventions for improving dairy consumption and their effectiveness to help policy-makers in designing coherent public health strategies. Methods: This study was conducted in 2019, using PubMed/MEDLINE, Scopus, EMBASE, Cochrane Library, Web of Science, ProQuest, and Google Scholar. Two independent reviewers selected the eligible studies, and the outcomes of interest were extracted. The quality of eligible studies was assessed using the Joanna Briggs Institute Critical Appraisal Checklist for randomized controlled trials and quasiexperimental studies. Results: Out of 521 initially identified articles, 25 studies were included. Interventions reported in 19 studies were effective in increasing dairy consumption. Interventions in high-income countries were more effective than those in middle-and low-income countries. Interventions in health centers and supermarkets were more effective than the community and school-level interventions. Interventions in supermarkets and adolescents as target groups were more effective than children, middle-aged people, and the elderly. Also, educational interventions and changing buying/selling pattern were more effective than multiple interventions. Interventions longer than 24 and 48 weeks were more effective than shorter interventions. Conclusion: Three policy options including educational interventions, multiple interventions, and changing the purchase pattern are suggested. It seems that applying all of the interventions together can be more effective. Also, long-term and well-designed future studies in different settings are recommended to confirm these results.

Digital educational technology for care management of diabetes mellitus people’s feet

Objective: to develop and validate a distance learning course aimed at the pillars of care management of diabetes mellitus people’s feet. Method: a technological production research using Moodle Virtual Learning Environment, based on Andragogy, Constructionism and Instructional Design. Content is based on consensus guidelines on diabetic foot. Validation was carried out by distance education, diabetes and/or diabetic foot experts. Results: the course’s content is based on diabetic foot guidelines, and is structured in units with didactic material, videos, forums and questionnaires to assess the participants’ learning. The judges considered it appropriate to meet nurses’ needs in clinical practice. Conclusion: the virtual learning course has been validated, being a promising strategy for training nurses on care management of diabetes mellitus people’s feet.

Objetivo: Avaliar a qualidade de vida (QV) de pacientes diabéticos utilizando o instrumento Medical Outcomes Study 36-item Short Form Health Survey (SF-36). Métodos: estudo quantitativo, transversal e descritivo, realizado com 98 pacientes diabéticos assistidos em uma Estratégia de Saúde da Família da região metropolitana de Porto Alegre, Brasil, por meio de questionário sociodemográfico e do SF-36. Resultados: 59 (60,2%) eram do sexo feminino e a faixa etária entre 50 e 69 anos correspondia a 46,9% da amostra. O diabetes mellitus tipo 2 foi o mais prevalente (68,4%) e a maioria (80,6%) fazia uso exclusivo de hipoglicemiantes orais. As médias dos domínios do SF-36 variaram entre 42,6 ± 44,9(Limitação por Aspectos Físicos) e 70,0 ± 30,1 (Aspectos Sociais). Os diabéticos participantes de atividade educativa apresentaram melhores escores de QV no domínio Dor (61,2 ± 24,8 vs. 45,4 ± 26,2; p = 0,015). Conclusão: os escores do SF-36 apresentaram-se medianos, sugerindo influência negativa do diabetes na qualidade de vida dos participantes. As atividades educativas em grupo mostraram-se associadas a pontuações médias mais elevados dos domínios do escore de QV.
