Impact of dyslexia in Ecuador: relations with the IQ, laterality, sex and kind of school This study reviews the dyslexia incidence in 207 students of primary school, from 8 to 13 years old, attending both state and private institutions in the city of Cuenca (Ecuador). A 26.57% of occurrence was found, from which 36% of cases presented superficial dyslexia, 33% presented phonological dyslexia and 31% presented mixed dyslexia. Subsequently, variables such as sex, laterality, IQ and kind of institution are compared, being the two latest the only ones which show significant differences. Circumstances for such high incidence are discussed in this research. Keywords: Dyslexia, educational system, IQ, laterality, specific learning disabilities.
A study into reading behavior and reading compliance among 2,600 students in five universities in Ecuador found that their reading behavior and reading compliance were better than among students in the United States, despite the challenges that exist in Ecuadorian higher education. Suggestions for future research, in particular with regard to improving students’ time management skills as a way to enhance their reading compliance, are included.
ABSTRACTGiftedness in primary education, a study of prevalence in ecuadorian children. Ecuador is a country with quite recent policies regarding attention to intellectually gifted individuals. While these normative frameworks are good intended, it is necessary that their statement and scope consider the situation of children with these conditions. The objective of this work is to determine the prevalence of giftedness in children attending at primary schools in Cuenca-Ecuador and compare with the index reported by the Ministry of Education. For this study the participants were 2021 children enrolled in second, fourth and sixth year of primary education, from public and private schools. To analyze the giftedness construct, two factors of the tripartite Pfeiffer model were used. The first factor, IQ, was assessed by combining the scores of two tests: Raven s and, according to the age of the participants, BADyG E1, E2 or E3. The second factor refers to academic performance, for this study we evaluated five academic fields: science, social studies, mathematics, language and general performance...
The mechanisms for the development of acquired melanocytic nevi remain mostly unclear. Here we report a case of eruptive nevi that developed after localized superficial trauma, and review the currently known cellular and triggering factors for acquired melanocytic nevi. A 66-year-old woman presented a linear arrangement of pigmented macules on her left calf that developed after a bloodless skin erosion on the same spot, resulting from friction with the lining of a ski boot. Dermatopathology identified multiple junctional proliferations of single or small nest-forming melanocytes with bridging, pigment incontinence and moderate cellular atypia. The number of a person’s nevi correlates with age, race and genetics, but blistering diseases, scarring processes, light exposure and immunosuppression can contribute to nevocellular growth as well. Damaged keratinocytes and inflammatory cells can release growth factors inducing nevus cell proliferation, and immunosuppression could end cellular surveillance keeping preexisting nevus cell nests in check. We conclude that in predisposed patients, the trigger for eruptive nevi can be reduced to a simple localized minor trauma.
Objective: The current study examined the differences in visual selective attention, orthographic word recognition, and executive functioning. Method: One hundred and forty Ecuadorian children in third and fifth grades of elementary school (8-10 years old) participated in the study—35 with only dyslexia (DD), 35 with the combined type of attention deficit and hyperactivity disorder (ADHD-C), 35 with disorders (DD + ADHD-C), and 35 typical development children (TD). Results: The Ecuadorian children with DD and/or ADHD-C in this age range usually have difficulties in visual selective attention, and also in orthographic word recognition. The executive functioning results showed that such functioning was worse in the ADHD-C groups (with or without DD), but not in the DD group, supporting the dissociation between DD and ADHD-C in executive functioning in this population. Conclusion: The DD + ADHD-C comorbidity produces worse deficits compared to DD, but not compared to ADHD-C, supporting the idea that there are common factors in DD and ADHD-C.
ABSTRACTGiftedness and adhd: a dual exceptionality unattended. Dual exceptionality refers to the population with high intellectual potential in co-occurrence with some type of disorder. A dual exceptionality present in schools is the one that combines giftedness with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). The objective of this article is to analyze the empirical and review studies from the last five years, focused on the dual exceptionality giftedness-ADHD, in primary school children. 10 articles were obtained with the specific research topic. A series of key characteristics and symptomatology were established for the differential diagnosis of this dual exceptionality. In addition, the development of subjects with this condition in the social, emotional, family and educational aspects was described, determining their limitations in the context and the coping mechanisms they develop. Finally, relevant aspects of the intervention in this dual exceptionality were identified, considering the benefits of alternative therapies such as Mindfulness. This review identifies the lack of experience that exists regarding this issue, largely due to the current poor approach from the scientific community, especially in Latin America. All this shows the need for intervention in a population little attended within the classrooms, as well as a condition that must be studied and included in the training of education professionals.
