Interpersonal interactions as social processes reflect and influence individuals' mental health. The aim of the study was to verify how marital interactions relate to mental health, and to investigate evidence for the validity of the Checklist for Interpersonal Transactions II (CLOIT-II). Participants were 169 couples from the southeast of the Brazilian state of Goiás, aged between 18 and 55 years (M = 21; SD = 5.48). They responded to a General Health Questionnaire (GHQ) and the CLOIT-II. Participants with low mental health problem scores in the GHQ (asymptomatic participants) tended to occupy interpersonal positions in the range between Deference/Trust and Affective warmth/Friendliness. In the group with high scores (symptomatic participants), interactions were defined by Coldness/Hostility. Mental health problems were positively correlated with mistrust, coldness and hostility and negatively correlated with positions of Affiliation. These results, in addition to supporting the validity of the CLOIT-II, indicate that the study of interpersonal relationships is relevant for the understanding of mental health.
PROFILE OF INTERPESONAL RELATIONS AND SOCIAL SKILLS OF PSYCHOLOGY UNDERGRADUATES AbstractThis study the profile of Psychology undergraduates was compared to that of other undergraduates. Interpersonal relations and social skills were evaluated using the Checklist for Interpersonal Transactions-II (CLOIT-II) and the Social Skills Inventory (IHS). 153 students were studied in Belo Horizonte and surroundings. Significance of profile difference was evaluated using the Student's t-test. The results suggest that the profile of Psychology undergraduates can be characterized by more friendly relations, greater willingness to interact, showing less affection and having more social skills than other undergraduates. This lead to the conclusion that Psychology undergraduates perceive their interpersonal relations as adaptive to social models and their social skills as a little more apparent than undergraduates in other areas of studies.
Conjugality refers to the shared experience between partners characterized by an enduring bond. It is related to a high degree of intimacy, affective involvement, and different interpersonal strategies, and it is seen by partners as their most significant relationship. Such intensity makes couple interaction different from any other type of relationship. The objective of this study was to verify how interpersonal attitude of the participants toward their spouses are associated with their partners and the independent interviewer’s perception of their attitudes. The results showed that the participants had a perception of themselves that was, in general, congruent with their partners’ and the interviewer’s perception. However, the spouses agreed more about their relationship roles (dominant or submissive) and disagreed on the dedicated affection (friendly or hostile) between them. In contrast, the interviewer overestimated the subjects’ attempts to control but confirmed the presence of statements of affection. The results obtained also provided a realistic portrait of marital interactions, increasing the application spectrum of the Checklist de Relações Interpessoais (Check list of Interpersonal Transactions).
