RESUMO -(Avanços nas pesquisas etnobotânicas no Brasil). A Etnobotânica moderna é produto de mudanças históricas ocorridas dentro e fora da academia. O trabalho buscou traçar a trajetória dessa disciplina e suas tendências no Brasil. Para tal foi realizado um levantamento dos trabalhos, no período de 1968-2007, desenvolvidos por pesquisadores brasileiros no país e publicados nas revistas científicas de circulação nacional, internacional e em eventos nacionais. O artigo discute sobre o desenvolvimento da Etnobotânica e sobre a crescente valorização do conhecimento construído por populações não-industrializadas. Neste contexto destaca-se a influência das mudanças de interesses científicos e econômicos ao longo dos períodos avaliados e, especialmente, da implementação da Convenção sobre Diversidade Biológica. O desenvolvimento da Etnobotânica teve um impacto sobre a produção científica brasileira e refletiu em um notório incremento de trabalhos nesta área do conhecimento, porém ainda com predominância de estudos relacionados a plantas medicinais e/ou abordagens descritivas. Por fim, são tecidas algumas considerações sobre a atual situação da Etnobotânica no Brasil face às regulamentações legais determinadas pela Convenção sobre Diversidade Biológica.Palavras-chave: América Latina, botânica econômica, conhecimento tradicional, etnobiologia, etnoecologia, histórico da etnobotânica ABSTRACT -(Advances in ethnobotany research in Brazil). Modern Ethnobotany is a product of historical changes occurring inside and outside of the academy. The following article aimed to trace the trajectory and tendencies of Ethnobotany in Brazil. For this purpose, a review was performed of works which were developed by Brazilian researchers between 1968-2007, and published in scientific journals of either national or international scope and during national events. The article discusses the development of Ethnobotany and the increased value of the knowledge of non-industrialized peoples. In this context, the influences that stand out are changes in scientific and economic interests during the period evaluated and, especially, the implementation of the Convention on Biological Diversity. The development of Ethnobotany had an impact on Brazilian scientific production and caused a notable increase of works in this knowledge area, yet with the predominance of studies still regarding medicinal plants and/or descriptive approaches. Finally, we discuss the current situation in Brazilian Ethnobotany, in the context of the legal regulations determined by the Convention on Biological Diversity.

RESUMO -(Etnobotânica na Reserva Extrativista Marinha de Arraial do Cabo, RJ, Brasil). A Reserva Extrativista Marinha de Arraial doCabo (RESEX) localiza-se no município de Arraial do Cabo, região de Cabo Frio. É uma unidade de conservação de interesse ecológico-social e visa proteger o sustento dos pescadores artesanais, a flora e a fauna locais. O clima da região é tropical seco e a vegetação é de restinga. Este estudo objetivou inventariar as espécies vegetais usadas na faixa terrestre da RESEX, associando este conhecimento às tradições locais. As informações etnobotânicas foram obtidas através de observação participante e entrevistas estruturadas com pescadores artesanais. Das 444 citações de uso, catalogou-se 68 espécies, 61 gêneros e 42 famílias. As categorias de uso foram: alimentar (45,6%), medicinal (39,7%), tecnológica (29,4%), lenha (10,2%), construção (8,8%) e ornamental (2,9%). Utilizou-se o Índice de Shannon para análise da diversidade de espécies resultando: 1,78 (base 10) e 4,10 (base e), denotando que os pescadores possuem bom conhecimento da biodiversidade local, quando comparado a outros estudos da costa brasileira. Os dados obtidos nesta pesquisa possibilitarão a formulação de estratégias de uso sustentável dos recursos naturais, considerando a percepção ambiental da população, baseado nos sistemas cognitivos desenvolvidos ao longo do convívio do homem com a natureza. The Arraial do Cabo Marine ExtractiveReserve (RESEX), is located on Arraial do Cabo Municipality, Cabo Frio region. It is a conservation unit with social and ecological interest, that intends to protect the livelihood of traditional fishermen, local flora and fauna. The climate is tropical dry and the vegetation classified as sandy-coastal-plain vegetation. This study goal was to survey useful species on the land part of RESEX, and associate this knowledge to local traditions. The ethnobotanical data was obtained by observer participation and structured interviews with traditional fishermen. From the 444 use citations, there were 68 species, 61 genera and 42 families. Use categories were as follows: food (45,6%), medicinal (39,7%), technology (29,4%), firewood (10,2%), construction (8,8%) and ornamental (2,9%). The Shannon Index was used to analyse the diversity of useful species, with the result of 1,78 (base 10) and 4,10 (base e), showing that the local fishermen have knowledge about the biodiversity, compared to other studies of Brazilian coast. Data from this research will make possible the development of strategies for the sustainable use of natural resources, considering the environment perception of the population, based on cognitive systems developed over time between man and nature.

RESUMO São reunidas informações sobre uso de plantas numa comunidade rural, Gleba Aldeia Velha, nos arredores da Reserva Biológica de Poço das Antas (Silva Jardim, Rio de Janeiro), a partir de entrevistas com 19 moradores selecionados. Foram obtidas 549 citações de uso de 210 espécies, subordinadas a 74 famílias. Asteraceae, Leguminosae, Lamiaceae, Euphorbiaceae, Myrtaceae e Poaceae apresentam maiores riquezas. A categoria medicinal reúne o maior número de espécies utilizadas, as quais, em sua maioria, são cultivadas (71,9%). O índice de Shannon (H') obtido corresponde a 2,20, indicando que a comunidade detém um bom conhecimento sobre o uso de recursos vegetais. A extração seletiva, um dos fatores da redução das populações de espécies típicas às matas de baixada, como o ipê-tamanco (Tabebuia cassinoides) e o pau-pereira (Picramnia ciliata), restringe-se ao passado. O reconhecimento que a comunidade tem da importância da conservação dos remanescentes florestais da região, aliado ao conhecimento tradicional fixado constituem importantes instrumentos na estratégia de ações para uso sustentado destes recursos genéticos salvaguardados nas Unidades de Conservação e valorização das comunidades circunvizinhas.

RESUMO -(Plantas medicinais e ritualísticas vendidas em feiras livres no Município do Rio de Janeiro, RJ, Brasil: estudo de caso nas zonas Norte e Sul). O Município do Rio de Janeiro (RJ) possui 210 feiras livres cadastradas pela Prefeitura, destas 33 localizam-se nas zonas Norte e Sul do RJ. O presente estudo teve como objetivos conhecer as plantas medicinais e/ou ritualísticas vendidas em feiras livres no RJ, verificando suas indicações terapêuticas, posologia e procedência, valorizando o conhecimento empírico agregado dos erveiros e suas histórias de vida. Realizou-se 60 entrevistas semi-estruturadas e técnicas de observação direta e participante a 54 erveiros em 33 feiras livres. Relacionou-se 106 espécies vegetais distribuídas em 92 gêneros e 49 famílias; sendo 61 destas associadas exclusivamente ao uso medicinal, 19 ao uso ritualístico e 19 ao uso medicinal-ritual. Foram identificados múltiplos usos em duas espécies utilizadas como ritual-alimentar e quatro espécies medicinal-alimentar. As famílias mais representativas foram Asteraceae (18 espécies) e Lamiaceae (11 espécies). Em relação à procedência, 14% dos erveiros informaram que as espécies vendidas são cultivadas, 20% extraem da mata e 66% adquirem as plantas em grandes mercados do Município. Estas informações poderão subsidiar atividades que possam contribuir para melhor orientação sobre as plantas medicinais e/ou ritualísticas mais vendidas no RJ.Palavras-chave: etnobotânica, feira livre, plantas medicinais, plantas ritualísticas ABSTRACT -(Medicinal and ritual plants sold in street markets of Rio de Janeiro, RJ, Brazil: a case study in the North and South zones). Rio de Janeiro Municipality has 210 licensed street fairs of which 33 are located in the northern and southern zones. This study aims to identify the medicinal and ritual plants sold at the street fairs in Rio de Janeiro, verify therapeutic use, dosage and origin, and show the importance of the herb sellers´s empirical knowledge and life histories. In 60 private interviews with 54 herb sellers, 106 species (92 genera; 49 families) were recorded: 61 for medicinal purposes, 19 for religious application and 19 for medicinal-religious purposes. Some species had multiple uses: two for religious-dietary purposes and four for medicinal-dietary use. The most representative families are Asteraceae (18 species) and Lamiaceae (11 species). As regards origin, 14 % of the herb sellers reported that the species sold were home-grown, 20% extracted them from the forest and 66% purchased them from the large municipal open markets. Background The article aims to analyze the representativeness of women in ethnobiological publications within the Brazilian context, as well as to relate the difficulties faced by women in their scientific careers in terms of gender bias. Biases found in publications are relevant themes to different areas of knowledge, considering the historical persistence of male privilege in these activities. We analyzed the role of women in ethnobiological scientific publications and sought to reflect on gender issues in academic practices and fieldwork. Methods We conducted a 28-year survey of academic publications in Brazil, through the Scopus and Web of Science databases, in order to infer the female representation in ethnobiological literature. We also sent 77 questionnaires to ethnobiologists associated with the Brazilian society of ethnobiology and ethnoecology or indicted by associates through snowball sampling. Results We observed that there are more articles where the senior author is male ( p < 0.05). However, there are no differences in the number of publications led by men and women ( p > 0.05), which shows a positive trend in terms of representation. Within subareas, ethnozoology had more male authors than other subareas of ethnobiology. Articles whose senior authors are men tend to be published in journals with a higher impact ( p < 0.05). The interviews with Brazilian ethnobiologists showed that 53.2% of the interviewees reported feeling discriminated against in the academic environment because they were women. Moreover, 61.0% said they had disadvantages in collecting data because they were women. Additionally, most of the researchers reported having witnessed cases of sexism in the studied communities. Conclusion In the current scenarios of female participation, it is possible to reflect and identify advances and challenges associated with gender bias in ethnobiological studies conducted by Brazilian, both in the emic and etic spheres of research and in our scientific practice. As researchers in the area, we deal directly with social problems in the studied communities, such as violence against women, sexism, and prejudice, as well as the many problems faced in the academic universe itself.

RESUMO(O ensino acadêmico da etnobotânica nas universidades do Brasil) A etnobotânica vem sendo definida como o estudo das sociedades humanas em suas relações com as plantas. É uma disciplina antiga em sua prática, mas jovem em sua teoria. A pesquisa etnobotânica cresceu na última década, especialmente na América Latina. Esse crescimento exigiu o entendimento da disciplina na sua diversidade teórico-metodológica, conseqüência do seu caráter interdisciplinar e necessidade da sistematização da mesma. Este trabalho buscou resgatar e avaliar o ensino formal da etnobotânica em instituições brasileiras, a partir de questionários enviados a Instituições de ensino e pesquisa no país. Utilizou-se ainda a via eletrônica para atualizações referentes aos cursos de graduações. Foram encontradas 13 instituições que oferecem etnobotânica como disciplina específica, e 27 instituições, em que a etnobotânica não é oferecida formalmente, sendo abordada apenas como tópico, principalmente relacionada aos cursos da área de Ciências Biológicas. Tanto os cursos com disciplinas específicas quanto aqueles em que consta como tópico, concentram-se nas instituições das Regiões Sudeste (51%) e Nordeste (31%). O trabalho incluiu também uma avaliação dos conteúdos programáticos das disciplinas e bibliografias utilizadas. Os dados mostraram uma tendência de crescimento do ensino formal da etnobotânica tanto na graduação quanto na pós-graduação no Brasil. Palavras-chave: Etnobotânica, Brasil, instituições de ensino. ABSTRACT(Ethnobotany academic teaching in Brazilian Universities) Ethnobotany is the study of human societies and their relationship with plants. It is an old discipline in practice, but young in theory. Ethnobotanical research has grown perceptibly in the past decade in many parts of the world, especially in Latin America. This growth calls for a broader understanding of the discipline in all its theoretical and methodological diversity. The interdisciplinary nature of ethnobotany also requires a greater academic systematization. This study focuses on the assessment of formal teaching methods of ethnobotany in Brazilian universities. Data were gathered from questionnaires sent over the Internet and filled out by graduate-course coordinators in Brazil, and by members of the Brazilian Ethnobotanical Committee of the Botanical Society of Brazil, and of the Brazilian Society of Ethnobiology and Ethnoecology. Thirteen Brazilian universities offer Ethnobotany as a specific discipline and in 27 other institutions, Ethnobotany is included as a topic in other disciplines. In both cases, these courses are generally offered by universities in Northeastern and Southeastern Brazil. The study included an evaluation of the contents as well as of references used in the courses. The data showed a strong tendency for growth of formal teaching of Ethnobotany in Brasil at both the undergraduate and graduate levels.

Background: Although multiple studies advocate the advantages of participatory research approaches for ethnoscience, few provide solid contributions from case studies that involve residents in all of the project phases. We present a case study of a participatory approach whose aim is to register ethnobotanical knowledge on the use of plants in two quilombola communities (maroon communities), an important biodiversity hotspot in the Atlantic Forest, Southeast Brazil. Our aim is to provide tools that will empower decision-making related to sustainable use and management among residents.Methods: In phase I, the objectives and activities were defined in meetings with residents to carry out ethnobotanical surveys between two quilombola communities-the Quilombo da Fazenda (QF) and Quilombo do Cambury (QC). In phase II, we offered community partners training courses on how to collect plants and ethnobotanical data. In coordination with the university team and using ethnobotanical methods, community partners interviewed specialists on plants and their uses. In phase III, using the participatory mapping method, residents indicated plot locations and collected plants to calculate the Conservation Priority Index for native species recorded in phase II. Results: In 178 days of fieldwork, two community partners from the QF and three from the QC selected 8 and 11 respondents who reported 175 and 195 plant species, respectively, corresponding to 9 ethnobotanical categories. Based on requests from the local community, booklets and videos with these data were collaboratively produced. A large percentage of species were found to be of great conservation priority-82.1% in the QC and 62.5% in the QF. Virola bicuhyba, Cedrela fissilis, Plinia edulis, and Tabebuia cassinoides are the species most at risk and will be the focus of phase IV, when a participatory management plan will be carried out. Additionally, we present both challenges and opportunities with the hope that others can learn from our successes and failures.

Conclusions Data obtained during participatory research show that training local communities in the registration of their own knowledge is feasible and necessary since they register knowledge based on local perceptions, as well as valuing knowledge and approaching the current discussion about intellectual property is a global concern.
