ABSTRACTDespite a clear distinction between the concepts of social marketing and societal marketing, a misguided usage of these terms keeps on recurring. In this sense, the work aimed at: (1) mapping the academic production concerning social marketing and societal marketing; and, in particular, (2) checking and analyzing possible distortions around their use. A bibliographic survey was developed in order to study the circumstances in which those themes arose; also, a bibliometric research was carried out together with a critical analysis of academic publications' contents referring to social marketing and societal marketing. It was possible to observe that, in spite of the expressive scientific production identified, there are remarkable distortions in the usage of the above mentioned terms, whether while presenting the concepts in a mistaken way or while expressing an incorrect meaning of them or even while applying them in an improper way. Keywords: Social marketing; Societal marketing; Evolution of marketing; Nonconformities in marketing; Types of marketing.

In a recent study by Andreoli, Lima and Minciotti (2016), it was verified that the scientific production related to social marketing and societal marketing themes is fraught with conceptual errors and confusions. In view of the seriousness of this finding, it was sought to assess the extent of this problem and, therefore, this work had as objective to identify if this conceptual confusion found in the national academic production on the terms, also permeates the teaching, analyzing the knowledge and understanding of the future potential researchers on the subject. For that, a quantitative research was carried out by means of a survey with stricto sensu postgraduate students (master's and doctorate) of the two best programs of the country in the Administration area, with a research line in Marketing. The results corroborate the conceptual confusion about the subjects also among the masters and doctoral students, revealing their ignorance about these themes, a fact that was even more evident for societal marketing.
