Assessment of Psidium spp. accessions for resistance to Meloidogyne enterolobiiAbstract Forty-seven accessions of Psidium spp. were evaluated under greenhouse conditions for resistance to M. enterolobii, as part of an effort to develop resistant rootstocks and cultivars. For each accession, five to seven plants were produced from stem cuttings or from true seeds and, at the stage of four pairs of leaves, they were inoculated with 500 nematode eggs. One hundred and thirty-five days later, the plants were removed from the pots and half of root system was processed for extraction of eggs. The plants were replanted with the remaining roots. The egg counts, obtained from three 1 mL aliquots per plant, were multiplied by two to obtain the final nematode population (Pf). The Pf values of all aliquots were submitted to ANOVA, which revealed significant differences among accessions and among plants of the same accession. The plants were classified as resistant or susceptible based on the reproduction factor (RF = Pf/500). All plants of cattley guava (P. cattleyanum) (accessions 115 and 116) were resistant (RF <1) to M. enterolobii, while other Psidium spp. presented some plants with RF below or just above 1. These plants will be propagated and reassessed for resistance to M. enterolobii.
Currently, biological control methods, such as the use of Trichoderma spp., have provided alternatives to chemical control, as they promote less environmental impact and favor the plant growth. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of T. harzianum on the emergence of soybean seeds inoculated with Sclerotinia sclerotiorum, besides identifying the interaction between fungi and soybeans by means of scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Soybean seeds were subjected to the following treatments: 1. Without S. sclerotiorum, in PDA+Mannitol; 2. With S. sclerotiorum, in PDA+Mannitol; 3. With Ecotrich ® WP and without S. sclerotiorum, in PDA+Mannitol; 4. Silva, F.F.; Castro, E.M.; Moreira, S.I.; Ferreira, T.C.; Lima, A.E.; Alves, E. Emergence and ultrastructural analysis of soybean seedlings inoculated with Sclerotinia sclerotiorum under the effect of Trichoderma harzianum application. Summa Phytopathologica, v.43, n.1, p.41-45, 2017. With S. sclerotiorum and Ecotrich ® WP, in PDA+Mannitol. The emergence test was conducted on trays with sterile sand at 25 °C for 8 days. Then, the vegetative organs of emerged seedlings were sectioned to evaluate, by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), T. harzianum potential to parasitize and inhibit S. sclerotiorum. In fact, the white mold is capable of colonizing and deteriorating all soybean seeds. T. harzianum is effective in colonizing the root system of soybeans but does not contribute to emergence, compared to control. Based on the ultrastructural analysis, mycoparasitism of T. harzianum and S. Sclerotiorum was evidenced, but the control of the causal agent of white mold was not as effective as shown in other studies.
ABSTRACTTo verify the response of different varieties of chrysanthemum to doses of calcium an experiment was conducted in a green house using a three-phase hydroponic system on a gravel substrate. It was set up in a completely random blocks with split-plot design, using four calcium doses (1.0; 2.5; 4.0; 5.5 mmol L -1 ) in the plots disposed and three chrysanthemum varieties (Blush Hawai, Calabria and Dark Flamengo) in the subplots. Three repetitions were used with 96 plants by repetition. Complete nutrient solutions were used with the different calcium doses. The following factors were evaluated: fresh matter weight of leaf, stem, inflorescence and shoot; cycle; number of inflorescences, stem length and the longevity, expressed in the number of days from harvest to disposal of the inflorescences (withered and losing flower coloring). The earliest and most productive varieties were Calabria and Blush Hawai. There was linear increase in the longevity of the three varieties with the increase of the concentrations of calcium in the nutrient solution. The best development and growth of the varieties of chrysanthemum was obtained when used the nutrient solution with 4.0 mmol L -1 calcium. Summa Phytopathologica, v.43, n.3, p.212-217, 2017. Palavras ABSTRACTThe aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of essential oils (EOs) of Cymbopogon sp. (Citronella -CI) and Cymbopogon citratus (Lemon grass-CL) in reducing bacterial speck (Pseudomonas syringae pv. tomato -Pst.) and activation of some biochemical defense responses in tomato plants. A test was performed in vitro to assess the presence or absence of Pst inhibition halo by Eos; an experiment was carried out in vivo to evaluate the best concentration of these two oils to control bacterial speck, and another experiment was conducted to evaluate the potential of these oils and acibenzolar-S-methyl (ASM) in the activation of some biochemical responses in the tomato plant (cv. Santa Cruz). , were effective in controlling bacterial speck when applied once at seven days before pathogen inoculation. CI essential oil and ASM provided partial protection capacity in tomato plants challenged with Pst. In addition, the oils and ASM promoted an increase in the total amount of phenol and cell wall lignification. Therefore, this study demonstrated the potential use of EOs in controlling tomato bacterial speck, evidencing resistance induction as the main active mode of action. SilvaKeywords: Pseudomonas syringae pv. tomato, tomato diseases, alternative disease control, Solanum lycopersicum.
