In twenty-first century, free-living endophytic and rhizosphere-competent microbes have become breakthrough strategies to meet global demands for sustainable foods and renewable fuelstocks owing to their great potential to produce stress-tolerant food and energy crops. Here, we investigate how Bacillus aryabhattai could mitigate water stress by drought in sugarcane seedlings. Briefly, the sugarcane genotypes, namely IAC91-1099 and RB85-5156, both exposed to cells-centrifuged B. aryabhattai suspension at 1x10 8 CFU mL-1 and non-treated were developed under irrigation regimes of 0, 7, 14 and 21 days to simulate different degrees of soil moisture content. The osmotolerant bacterium remarkably enhanced development of aboveground structures and root system, mainly in irrigated seedlings of IAC91-1099. Clearly noted that microbial metabolism depends on genotype and soil water potential to promote plant growth. This bacterium probably enabled sugarcane plants in early phenological stages to cope with water deficit by regulation of plant growth hormones along with solubilization of nutrients. Of particular importance, the bacterium exerted more pronounced effects by conferring drought tolerance at 7 and 14 days irrigation interval, irrespective of sugarcane genotype, which also translated into increased biomass of shoots and roots. Microbial degradation of ethylene precursors exuded in rhizosphere could reasonably explain why B. aryabhattai-associated seedlings developed deeper root systems to uptake water and nutrients and, consequently, allocating larger amounts of dry matter to shoots. Collectively, our findings provide relevant insights on the beneficial effects of the cacti-associated B. aryabhattai in alleviating the harmful effects of drought stress in seedlings and contribute to increasing our understanding of the phenotypic outcomes from the interaction between sugarcane genotypes and a beneficial rhizobacterium. Hence, this bacterial inoculant forms a low-cost and ecologically sound strategy to enhancing drought stress tolerance in sugarcane crops planted in water-limited zones in Brazil.

Genetic diversity analysis has guided the choice of appropriate parents in breeding programs. Multivariate statistical methods such as discriminant analysis are used to obtain the necessary results in these studies. However, to obtain reliable results, one must meet assumptions such as covariance matrix heterogeneity and multivariate normality of the observation vector. Artificial Neural Network (ANN), Support Vector Machine (SVM), Decision Tree (DT) and its refinements do not have these assumptions and may be used in the choice of appropriate parents. This study evaluates the robustness of the Fisher's discriminant function under covariance matrix heterogeneity and multivariate non-normal random vectors. The results were compared with those obtained from Quadratic Discriminant Analysis (QDA), ANN, SVM and DT. Scenarios characterized by heterogeneous covariance matrices and multivariate non-normal random vectors were simulated. Considering the apparent error rate (APER), the SVM method (APER-Normal = 0.07; APER-Poisson = 0.13) and quadratic discriminant method (APER-Normal = 0.09; APER-Poisson = 0.09) presented better results for scenarios simulated with covariance matrix heteroscedasticity. For scenarios with multivariate normality and covariance matrix homoscedasticity, the SVM (APER = 0.15) and ANN (APER = 0.06) presented best results. For situations in which the data had multivariate Poisson distribution and covariance matrix homogeneity, the SVM (APER = 0.15), Fisher's discriminant function (APER = 0.19) and ANN (APER = 0.19) presented better performances. Finally, DT refinements (Bagging, Random Forest and Boosting) presented APER values less than 0.25 and are shown to be alternatives.Additional Keywords: quadratic discriminant function; multivariate analysis, simulation. Entretanto, a obtenção de resultados confiáveis está associada ao atendimento de pressupostos, como por exemplo a heterogeneidade de matrizes de covariância e normalidade multivariada do vetor de observações. Redes Neurais Artificiais (RNA), Máquina de Vetor Suporte (MVS), Árvores de Decisão (AD) e seus refinamentos, não possuem pressupostos e podem ser utilizadas para esse fim. Effect of Bacillus aryabhattai on the initial establishment of pre-sprouted seedlings of sugarcane varieties

This study proposes to examine the potential use of Bacillus aryabhattai in pre-sprouted seedlings of sugarcane inoculated with the microorganism when subjected to different regimes of water supply after transplanting. The experiment was laid out in a randomized-block design with a complete 3 × 2 × 5 factorial arrangement, in five replicates. The factors were represented by pre-sprouted seedlings of three sugarcane varieties (IAC 911099, RB 855156 and CTC 20), two seedling types (inoculated and not inoculated with B. aryabhattai) and five frequencies of water supply, which provided the ability of return to 100% soil field capacity, at every 0, 10, 20, 30 and 40 days. Plant mortality, plant height, number of leaves, stalk diameter and number of tillers were evaluated throughout the experimental period. At the end of the study, the shoot dry matter (SDM) and root dry matter (RDM) contents of the plants were measured. The number of leaves on the plant was affected only in isolation, according to the cultivar, without effects of the other studied factors. There was a double interaction effect between the factors of variety and inoculation (V*I) for the variables of SDM, stalk diameter and height; and between frequency and inoculation (F*I) for stalk diameter. There was a triple interaction effect between variety, inoculation and frequency (V*I*F) for the RDM variable. Thus, the use of B. aryabhattai as an inoculant in pre-sprouted seedlings of sugarcane at the time of seedling formation can improve plant development after transplanting depending on the cultivar used, especially in IAC 911099 and RB 855156.
