AbstractCovid-19 incited biopsychosocial changes in world society, which trigger an increase mental disorders in medical students. The study aims to clarify the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic on the medical students’ mental health. A bibliographic review was carried out on the Google Scholar, Scientific, Electronic Library Online (SciELO), PubMEdand Virtual Health Library databases, using the descriptors: mental health, medical student, pandemic, covid-19, published in Portuguese and English, in 2020. 40 articles were selected, 14 of which 09 were used. The materials show that the main mental disorders observed are anxiety, depression, stress and fear, many times related to training uncertainty due to the current cenario. This troubled scenario caused by Covid-19 increased mental disorders in medical students due to the insecurity of how the pandemic affects medical education and training, leading to a higher incidence of university students with impaired mental health. Purpose Since cytomegalovirus retinitis (CR) is an important cause of visual impairment among AIDS patients and HLA-C alleles have been associated with AIDS disease outcome, we typed HLA-C locus in patients with AIDS exhibiting or not CR. Methods Three groups of individuals were studied: (i) 49 patients with AIDS and CR (Group I), (ii) 161 patients with AIDS without CR (Group II), and (iii) 202 healthy HIV-negative individuals (Group III). HLA-C typing was performed using commercial kits. Results The HLA-C∗07 allele group was underrepresented in AIDS patients with CR (P=0.005) when compared to controls or when compared to AIDS patients without CR (P=0.006). The HLA-C∗05 allele group was overrepresented in Group II in comparison to Group III (P=0.017). The frequency of the HLA-C∗16 allele group was increased in Group III in comparison to Group II (P=0.004). Conclusion The HLA-C∗07 allele group conferred protection against the development of CR in Brazilian AIDS patients, whereas the HLA-C∗05 and HLA-C∗16 allele groups were associated with AIDS susceptibility or protection, respectively.
AbstractThe UEMS Medicine course adopts the Problem-Based Learning - PBL as a methodological strategy for the thematic modules, which aggregate most of the course theoretical content. This curricular construction presupposes an integrated curriculum and strategies of summative and formative evaluation in its structure. The current study explores the regulatory function of formative assessment in which the teacher’s is not limited to verifying learning, but working with the intention of intervening in the learning process and development of the student's thinking, being necessary, therefore, clear and guiding evaluation parameters, in the search so that teachers and students obtain similar results. For this and considering the multiplicity of concepts and understandings of what it is and how it should be evaluated, the objective of this work was the construction of what we call 'approach tracks' for the evaluation instrument in tutorials of the UEMS Medicine course, in order to support the tutor’s pedagogical practice by reducing the subjectivity of the formative evaluation instrument. The strategy used by the teachers was the preparation of five approaches for each of the ten assessment items of the instrument applied in mentoring. It is believed that there was not only the implementation of a new evaluative system in the tutorial sessions of the UEMS Medicine course, but also an understanding by teachers and students of a new conception of why and how to evaluate. Keywords: Learning Evaluation. ABSTRACT Aims:To investigate the occurrence of visual disturbances in schoolchildren from a philanthropic institution in the city of Campo Grande, Mato Grosso do Sul, Brazil. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted with students aged six to 12 years, both male and female, who attended a philanthropic institution in 2012. The Ishihara test and the Snellen chart were used for visual screening. Later, those students with abnormal results were referred to a specialist. Results: Ninety-four schoolchildren were included in the study. Eighteen were found by the visual screening to have some impairment: suspected dyschromatopsia in five and poor visual acuity in 13, according to the Snellen chart. Eleven students, three with suspected dyschromatopsia and eight with poor visual acuity, went to see a specialist. After ophthalmologic evaluation, one child with suspected dyschromatopsia was unsure about the positive diagnosis. Among the students with abnormal visual acuity, two presented with visual deficit. Conclusions:The results show that, although a considerable number of students presented with some type of visual problem during the visual screening, impairment was not confirmed by most of the ophthalmologic evaluations. These findings highlight the importance of screening for the detection of visual disorders, provided that it is followed by ophthalmologic assessments for proper diagnosis and guidance.
Abstract Infection caused by the new Coronavirus (SARS-COV-2) causes a variable clinical picture. Due to its high transmissibility, Covid-19 was declared a pandemic. In view of this, in Brazil, the Ministry of Education (MEC) published an ordinance that temporarily suspended face-to-face activities at Higher Education Institutions (HEIs). Despite this and other measures, the number of cases and deaths in Brazil has, so far, increased exponentially, a fact that impacts the health and educational authorities, due to the exceptionality imposed on the development of teaching activities. In view of this context, the present study aimed to measure the frequency of the Flu Syndrome in medical students from Mato Grosso do Sul during the Covid-19 pandemic period, in order to propose resolutions for conducting academic activities. A descriptive, observational and cross-sectional study carried out among students enrolled in medical courses in the state of Mato Grosso do Sul. The data were obtained through a semi-structured questionnaire, online and based on the Google Forms platform. Descriptive results were prepared automatically, from the platform itself. Result: 371 responses were computed. Approximately 50% had flu-like symptoms, the most common of which were runny nose, nasal obstruction and cough. Among the diagnoses reported, the most described was rhinosinusitis, with 7 participants presenting Covid-19. It was possible to measure the condition of flu-like syndrome among medical students in this state, seeking to provide support and possible basis for decision-making by the coordinators of medical courses in Mato Grosso do Sul regarding the referral of academic activities.
