IMPORTANCEStudies have documented a higher disease burden in indigenous compared with nonindigenous populations, but no global data on the epidemiology of visual loss in indigenous peoples are available. A systematic review of literature on visual loss in the world's indigenous populations could identify major gaps and inform interventions to reduce their burden of visual loss.OBJECTIVE To conduct a systematic review on the prevalence and causes of visual loss among the world's indigenous populations.EVIDENCE REVIEW A search of databases and alternative sources identified literature on the prevalence and causes of visual loss (visual impairment and blindness) and eye diseases in indigenous populations. Studies from January 1, 1990, through August 1, 2017, that included clinical eye examinations of indigenous participants and, where possible, compared findings with those of nonindigenous populations were included. Methodologic quality of studies was evaluated to reveal gaps in the literature.FINDINGS Limited data were available worldwide. A total of 85 articles described 64 unique studies from 24 countries that examined 79 598 unique indigenous participants. Nineteen studies reported comparator data on 42 085 nonindigenous individuals. The prevalence of visual loss was reported in 13 countries, with visual impairment ranging from 0.6% in indigenous Australian children to 48.5% in native Tibetans 50 years or older. Uncorrected refractive error was the main cause of visual impairment (21.0%-65.1%) in 5 of 6 studies that measured presenting visual acuity. Cataract was the main cause of visual impairment in all 6 studies measuring best-corrected acuity (25.4%-72.2%). Cataract was the leading cause of blindness in 13 studies (32.0%-79.2%), followed by uncorrected refractive error in 2 studies (33.0% and 35.8%).CONCLUSIONS AND RELEVANCE Most countries with indigenous peoples do not have data on the burden of visual loss in these populations. Although existing studies vary in methodologic quality and reliability, they suggest that most visual loss in indigenous populations is avoidable. Improvements in quality and frequency of research into the eye health of indigenous communities appear to be required, and coordinated eye care programs should be implemented to specifically target the indigenous peoples of the world.

A visão é considerada um dos sentidos mais importantes para o desenvolvimento neuropsicomotor infantil e mostra-se essencial para a aprendizagem e socialização, desde os primeiros anos de vida. No entanto, as mudanças de conformações anatômicas e fisiológicas do aparelho ocular infantil, que ocorrem durante o crescimento, tornam as crianças suscetíveis às problemáticas de saúde ocular, necessitando de identificação e tratamento precoce para que possam ser resolvidas. Diante disso, este trabalho tem como meta apresentar um relato de experiência sobre o projeto extensionista “Triagem em Acuidade Visual e Identificação de Ametropias em Comunidade Terena Urbana em Campo Grande-MS”, desenvolvido por uma equipe acadêmica do Curso de Medicina da Universidade Estadual de Mato Grosso do Sul. O referido projeto teve como objetivo avaliar a acuidade visual em crianças com idade entre 3 a 12 anos, sendo desenvolvido em quatro etapas assim constituídas: planejamento das atividades com a comunidade, treinamento da equipe de trabalho, aplicação do teste de triagem em acuidade visual e estratégias de educação em saúde em oftalmologia. Por ter o percurso de seu desenvolvimento atingido pelo cenário da Covid-19, foi essencial que a equipe acadêmica fizesse adaptações e mudanças para minimizar os impactos negativos da pandemia sobre o projeto, que contou com a participação de cerca de 30 crianças. Os resultados dessa ação proporcionaram a detecção precoce de acometimentos de baixa acuidade visual em 4 crianças, perfazendo 13% do total pesquisado. Além disso, a ação fortaleceu a relação instituição-comunidade em meio à pandemia de Covid-19. Palavras-chave: Saúde Ocular; Relações Comunidade-Instituição; Medicina; Saúde de Populações Indígenas Visual acuity assessment in indigenous people and the pandemic challenges Abstract: Vision is considered one of the most important senses for the neuropsychomotor development of children and is essential for learning and socialization from the first years of life. However, the changes in anatomical and physiological conformations of the child's eye, which occur during growth, make children susceptible to eye health problems, requiring early identification and treatment so that they can be resolved. Therefore, this paper aims to present an experience report on the extension project "Visual Acuity Screening and Ametropia Identification in an Urban Terena Community in Campo Grande (Brazil)" developed by an academic team from the Medical School of the Mato Grosso do Sul State University. This project aimed at assessing the visual acuity in children aged 3 to 12 years old and was developed in four stages: planning of activities with the community, training of the work team, application of the visual acuity screening test, and strategies for health education in ophthalmology. Because the course of its development was affected by the Covid-19 scenario, it was essential for the academic team to make adaptations to minimize the negative impacts of the pandemic on the project, which had the participation of about 30 children. The results of this action provided early detection of low visual acuity in 4 children, 13% of the total surveyed. In addition, the action strengthened the institution-community relationship amid the Covid-19 pandemic. Keywords: Eye Health; Community-Institution Relations; Medicine; Health of Indigenous Peoples
