Low PON1 and AE activity may contribute to the increased liver dysfunction in chronic hepatitis patients by reducing the ability of HDL to retard LDL oxidation and might be clinically useful for monitoring the disease of chronic hepatitis.
We have shown that patients with coronary artery ectasia have an increased prevalence of varicocele compared to those with coronary artery disease. The mechanism underlying coronary artery ectasia might further increase the prevalence of varicocele in susceptible patients.
The number of clinical studies on gamma interferon (IFN-gamma), tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-alpha) and interleukin-4 (IL-4) in human brucellosis is limited. The present study was focused on IFN-gamma, TNF-alpha and IL-4 levels in acute brucellosis cases, in the acute phase and at the end of the treatment. The relation of these cytokines to traditional inflammation markers was also investigated. The study included 27 cases of acute brucellosis and 20 healthy volunteers who had no complaints. It was found that mean IFN-gamma and TNF-alpha levels, CRP (C-reactive protein) levels and ESR (erythrocyte sedimentation rate) values were significantly higher in acute brucellosis cases as compared to post-treatment values and values measured in the control group. In addition, IFN-gamma and TNF-alpha levels measured in the acute phase correlated with the increase in CRP levels and ESR values. Our results confirmed that IFN-gamma and TNF-alpha are involved in the pathophysiology of brucellosis and are closely related to the inflammatory activation of the disease. In view of the present findings, it is suggested that IFN-gamma and TNFalpha may be used for monitoring brucellosis.
PurposeTo investigate the seroprevalence of toxocariasis in patients diagnosed as schizophrenia.Patients and MethodsNinety-eight schizophrenic patients hospitalized at The Elazığ Psychiatric Hospital were included in the study. Anti-Toxocara IgG and/or IgM antibodies were determined by using commercial Toxocara canis IgG and/or IgM ELISA kit.ResultsSeropositivity for T. canis was detected in 45 (45.9%) of 98 patients and 2 (2.0%) of 100 control subjects the difference was statistically significant (p < 0.001). The seroprevalence was 40.4% (19 cases) and 51.0% (26 cases) for female and male subjects, respectively (p = 0.3). When the seropositive and seronegative schizophrenic patients were compared with respect to the age group environment they were living in, occupation period of follow up and number of hospitalizations, there were no differences between the two groups (all, p > 0.05).ConclusionIn conclusion, the schizophrenic state seems to present a high risk for Toxocara infection in Turkey.
It is well known that antioxidants and reactive oxygen species play an important role in carcinogenesis. In this study, we attempted to evaluate antioxidant enzyme activities and lipid peroxidation levels in cancerous bladder tissue and to determine their relationship with bacterial infection. Bacterial culture was made from all urine samples using Blood and Eosin Methylene Blue agars for checking the presence of bacterial infections. We measured thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARs) and activities of xanthine oxidase (XO), superoxide dismutase (SOD), glutathione peroxidase (GSH-PX), and catalase (CAT) in cancerous tissues of 25 bladder cancer patients, in noncancerous adjacent bladder tissues of 13 out of these 25 patients, and in control bladder tissues of 15 patients with a non-neoplastic genitourinary disease. TBARs levels increased and XO, SOD, GSH-PX, and CAT activities decreased significantly in cancerous bladder tissues. TBARS, XO, and SOD levels were not significantly different between noncancerous adjacent tissue and control bladder tissue. Statistically significantly lower GSH-PX and higher CAT activities were observed in noncancerous adjacent bladder tissue compared with cancerous tissue. GSH-PX level of tumor tissue was correlated significantly with tumor grade (r=-0.425, P=0.034). Results suggested that pathway activity of free radicals were accelerated in the cancerous human bladder tissues via increased TBARs levels and decreased enzyme activities of XO, SOD, GSH-PX, and CAT, which implicated a severe exposure of cancerous tissues to oxidative stress.
The aim of the study was to evaluate intracellular interferon-gamma (IFN-gamma), and interleukin-4 (IL-4) levels in pre- and post-treatment periods of brucellosis patients and to determine the relationship between these parameters and patients' clinical findings. Twenty-five patients diagnosed as brucellosis and 11 aged-matched healthy volunteers were included in the study. CD3+CD4+ T lymphocytes levels were significantly lower in patients with brucellosis as compared to the control group. CD3+CD8+ T lymphocytes and CD3+IFN-gamma+ levels were increased in brucellosis patients compared with the control group. CD4+IFN-gamma+ and CD4+IL-4+ levels were no different between patients and healthy individuals. CD3+IL-4+ levels decreased in patients compared with healthy controls. Pre-treatment CD3+IFN-gamma+ levels dramatically increased in patients responsive to management compared with the unresponsive ones. In responsive cases, CD3+IFN-gamma+ levels decreased statistically after the treatment while in unresponsive cases no meaningful change was observed with respect to treatment. Adding IFN-gamma to the treatment for improving the depleted levels of IFN-gamma can be beneficial in patients with brucellosis who shows a tendency to chronicity or patients who do not respond to the treatment.
Since polypoid cystitis (PC) is generally caused by indwelling catheter use, in order to evaluate the patients with PC unrelated to a intravesical catheter, a retrospective analysis of the records of the Pathology Department of Turgut Ozal Medical Center was performed and this revealed 8 patients. Mean age of the 2 female and 6 male patients was 48 years (28 to 70). None of the patients had bacterial growth in urine cultures. All cases were diagnosed incidentally by radiologic and cystoscopic examinations in the evaluation of different conditions, such as hematuria, ovarian abscess, bladder carcinoma, erectile dysfunction, neurogenic bladder, benign prostate hyperplasia and unexplained dysuria. At the beginning, all patients were diagnosed mistakenly as bladder carcinoma. The definitive diagnosis was made after histopathologic examinations of transurethrally resected specimens. Patients were followed for 6 months to 2 years after first diagnosis. No recurrence was established during follow-up. The final urologic examinations which were done currently, were normal. In conclusion, PC is a benign lesion and should be considered in the differential diagnosis of transitional cell carcinoma of the bladder.
Objectives: To study the prevalence and genotype distribution of hepatitis G virus (HGV) in hemodialysis patients in East Anatolia, Turkey. Subjects and Materials: Eighty-nine hemodialysis patients and 30 healthy individuals were analyzed by using reverse-transcriptase nested polymerase chain reaction with primers specific for 5′ untranslated region. HGV genotyping was performed by PCR and three randomly selected HGV-positive samples were sequenced. Results: Of the 89 hemodialysis patients, HGV RNA was detected in 9 (10.2%). All of our isolates were assigned to genotype 2. Conclusion: Our results showed that hemodialysis patients carry the risk for HGV infection in East Anatolia, Turkey.
