This study explores illness representations within Familial Amyloidotic Polyneuropathy Portuguese Association newspaper . A content analysis was performed of the issue data using provisional coding related to the conceptual framework of the study. All dimensions of illness representation in Leventhal's Common Sense Model of illness cognitions and behaviors are present in the data and reflect the experience of living with this disease. Understanding how a person living with an hereditary, rare, neurodegenerative illness is important for developing community nursing interventions. In conclusion, we suggest an integration of common sense knowledge with other approaches for designing an intervention program centered on people living with an hereditary neurodegenerative illness, such as familial amyloidotic polyneuropathy.
Métodos: Revisão integrativa da literatura, através de pesquisa eletrónica na plataforma B-ON, utilizando a expressão: (nursing) AND (palliative care) AND (acute hospital setting) NOT (child* OR infant* OR adolescent*), obtendo seis artigos de estudos primários. ABSTRACT Introduction:The World Health Organization (2015) presents as barriers to improving access to palliative care the lack of training and awareness of health professionals. Objectives: Identify the preparation of nurses who provide care, in the acute hospital setting, to develop palliative actions. Methods: Integrative literature review, through the electronic research in the B-ON platform, using the expression: (nursing) AND (palliative care) AND (acute hospital setting) NOT (child* OR infant* OR adolescent*), obtaining six articles of primary studies. Results: Obtained studies are representative of a total of 2220 nurses. The articles showed that nurses from acute hospitals, despite being able to care for patients with palliative care needs, felt that training in this area would be important in order to better understand the needs of these patients. Conclusion: Nurses consider that they have competencies to provide care related to palliative care in acute care, although recognizing that they should be provided with more formation.
Although the concept of spirituality is briefly analyzed, the principal aim of this article is to study spirituality in the bioethical thought of Daniel Serrão. For this purpose, a hermeneutical analysis was carried out on a collection of published and unpublished articles by Daniel Serrão on spirituality and religion. Results: The analysis and interpretation of the texts revealed three important notes or characteristics in the conception of spirituality in Daniel Serrão: mystical, horizontal and transcendence. These notes or characteristics are fundamental for understanding, and coincide with the structure of their triadic thinking: metaphysical, scientific and cultural. When we enter the "heart of the Serronian discourse" we perceive that it presents a uniqueness in diversity. That is to say, there is no split between ethical, transcendental and scientific discourse. In bioethical thinking, spirituality is based on existential metaphysics, on essential metaphysics and on metaphysics in relation.
Background: Personal and clinical experiences influence how nursing students cope with death. Objective: To assess nursing students' attitudes towards death and end-of-life care. Methods: Descriptive study. Data were collected through an online questionnaire. The sample consisted of 158 undergraduate nursing students. Quantitative data were analyzed using IBM SPSS Statistics software. Descriptive statistics and exploratory data analysis were performed through parametric and non-parametric tests. Results: Students tend more to attitudes of neutral acceptance, fear of death, and approach acceptance and less to attitudes of avoidance and escape. Regarding end-of-life care, students who had already completed clinical training showed positive attitudes. Conclusion:Teaching and learning methodologies should be used to allow students to expose their experiences with death and end-of-life care in clinical training.
