The relationship between Parkinson's disease (PD) and risk of hip fracture yielded inconsistent results. Therefore, we conducted the present systematic review and meta-analysis of published observational studies to assess the association between PD and risk of hip fracture. PubMed, ISI, EMBASE, and Cochrane databases were searched systematically to identify studies assessing the relationship between PD and the risk of hip fracture up to July 01, 2017. In addition, to find related articles, the reference section of retrieved articles was checked. Random-effects model was used for calculation of pooled hazard ratio (HR) and 95% confidence intervals (CI). Thirteen independent studies containing 564,947 participants were included in the meta-analysis. The overall results of included studies showed PD to be associated with the risk of hip fracture (HR = 3.13, 95% CI 2.53-3.87) in women 3.11 (2.51-3.86) and men 2.60 (2.19-3.09). Our meta-analysis showed the direct association between PD and the risk of hip fracture in both men and women. However, due to the limitations of this study, further well-designed studies are required to confirm our findings.

Nurses need to be resilient to be able to endure their working conditions, and their moral courage can affect their resilience. This work aimed at studying the relationship between resilience and professional moral courage among nurses working in hospitals. This descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted on 375 nurses working in teaching hospitals in the city of Ardabil in Iran in 2019. Data was collected using the following questionnaires: a demographic questionnaire, Sekerka et al. Moral Courage Scale and Davidson-Connor Resilience Scale. The reliability of the Davidson-Connor Resilience Scale, and Moral Courage Scale were found to be 89% and 85% using the test-retest method. The data were analyzed by Pearson correlation coefficient, t-test, variance analysis, and linear regression using the SPSS software version 24. In participating nurses, mean scores were 6.35±0.5 for total moral courage (favorable) and 79.35±0.35 (moderate) for resilience, respectively. A positive and significant relationship was observed between resilience and professional moral courage (P<0.05, r=0.1). Given the positive and significant relationship between resilience and professional moral courage, nurses require to have the high moral courage to enhance their resilience. Determining factors affecting moral courage and resilience, as well as finding strategies and creating an appropriate moral climate can increase nurses' morally courageous behaviors and resilience.

IntroductionThis study aimed to perform an updated systematic review and meta-analysis to evaluate the effectiveness of saffron supplementation on oxidative stress markers [malondialdehyde (MDA), total antioxidant capacity (TAC), total oxidant status (TOS), glutathione peroxidase (GPx), superoxide dismutase (SOD), and prooxidant/antioxidant balance (PAB)] in randomized controlled trials (RCTs).MethodsWe searched PubMed/Medline, Web of Science, Scopus, Cochrane CENTRAL, and Google Scholar until December 2022. Trial studies investigating the effects of oral saffron supplements on MDA, TAC, TOS, GPx, SOD, and PAB concentrations were included in the study. To analyze the results, mean differences (SMD) and 95% confidence intervals (CI) were pooled using a random effects model. Heterogeneity was assessed using the Cochrane Q and I2 values. Sixteen cases were included in the meta-analysis (468 and 466 subjects in the saffron and control groups, respectively).ResultsIt was found that saffron consumption caused a significant decrease in MDA (SMD: −0.322; 95% CI: −0.53, −0.16; I2 = 32.58%) and TOS (SMD: −0.654; 95% CI: −1.08, −0.23; I2 = 68%) levels as well as a significant increase in TAC (SMD: 0.302; 95% CI: 0.13, 0.47; I2 = 10.12%) and GPx (SMD: 0.447; 95% CI: 0.10, 0.80; I2 = 35%). Subgroup analysis demonstrated a significant reduction in MDA levels in studies with a saffron dosage of &gt;30 mg/day, age of &lt;50 years, and study duration of &lt;12 weeks. Among the limitations of the study, we can point out that the studies were from Iran, the different nature of the diseases included, and were not considered of some potential confounders such as smoking, physical activity, and diet in the studies.DiscussionIn summary, the results showed that saffron has beneficial effects on oxidative stress markers.
