Parkinson’s disease and risk of hip fracture: systematic review and meta-analysis

Abstract: The relationship between Parkinson's disease (PD) and risk of hip fracture yielded inconsistent results. Therefore, we conducted the present systematic review and meta-analysis of published observational studies to assess the association between PD and risk of hip fracture. PubMed, ISI, EMBASE, and Cochrane databases were searched systematically to identify studies assessing the relationship between PD and the risk of hip fracture up to July 01, 2017. In addition, to find related articles, the reference sectio… Show more

“…Recent reviews demonstrated [3][4][5][6][7][8] that female gender, disease duration and severity, old age, and low BMI are related to osteoporosis, whereas rigidity, bradykinesia, and postural instability (but not tremor) predict falls and increase the risk of osteoporotic fractures. Some authors showed that females and males with PD had significantly lower BMD values at femoral neck, whereas only female patients showed reliable differences in the lumbar spine BMD compared to subjects of control group [20].…”

“…Nowadays, the relationship between PD and risk of osteoporotic fracture yielded inconsistent results [6][7][8]23]. Recent meta-analysis of prospective studies, which was performed to explore the association between PD and fracture risk (six studies with 69387 participants) [6], found out that PD patients had an increased risk of fracture compared to control subjects (hazard ratio (HR) 2.66, 95% CI: 2.10-3.36).…”

“…Previous meta-analyses have focused on the general risk of fractures (5,6). A recently published systematic review on the risk of hip fractures excluded studies that only reported event rates without a summary statistic and it excluded studies that included patients with parkinsonism, which may have affected the pooled risk estimate reported (8). Parkinsonism is an atypical form of Parkinson's disease that makes up about 10% of cases and may progress more rapidly than Parkinson's disease and is less responsive to the usual treatment, levodopa.…”
