Although resident doctors have a little more general knowledge on RD than other surveyed groups, health and non-health future professionals have a low general knowledge on this topic and none of them prioritized the assignment of funds to RD.
Treatment of cultural and religious diversity is one of the most important debates in education, especially in societies in the first decades of the 21st century, in which globalization processes have led to increased migration. Different models exist for addressing religious and cultural diversity in compulsory education, linked to the different ways of approaching the integration of immigrant groups. The treatment of diversity, equality, and respect for fundamental rights are the axes on which most of these proposals revolve, which in the case of the religious issue acquire specific dimensions by generating a wider debate. In the Spanish case, the treatment of cultural diversity and, fundamentally, religious diversity is situated both within the framework of general conceptions and with particular elements. The contemporary scenario of how the Spanish educational system addresses cultural and religious diversity is determined from the particular features of Spanish education and the immigration “boom” in Spain in much of the first decade of the 21st century. The evolution of legislation on diversity, the fact that education is a subject for ideological debate, and the need to face the challenge of a new social structure because of immigration, together with the importance of the Catholic Church in Spain, determine to a large extent the way this country has addressed religious diversity. The treatment of religious and cultural diversity continues to generate an important discussion in Spain, based on different theories about the topic.
AbstractEducation is present in mass media but there is a complex relation between both. First, because a part of the news about education are marked by exceptionality, negativity and catastrophism. Second, the debate in Spain on education is marked by the ideological and political struggle. Furthermore, are considered the changes in the mass media, the arrival of the Internet and the growth of the digital press. This article analyzes in an exploratory way the presence of education in the Spanish mass media, fundamentally digital media. From studies on the issue and reviewing reports in recent months, the main topics, their treatment and the consideration of education in the media are presented. The main results are the partial presence of education in the media, the weight of the political battle and the influence of actors and agents, educational or not, in that process.
Parent engagement programs are in high demand these days, particularly as they pertain to immigrant and refugee families. But working with families entails purposeful communication with families (Valdés, 1996). Yet, often families are caught in cross-cultural divides that forces them out of engagement with those running the program (Machado-Casas, 2012). Cultural disconnections often times become ways in which minority families find themselves trapped (Nieto & Bode, 2011). Some researchers have looked at non-traditional pedagogical spaces to challenge future and practicing educators and community members to examine how the process of normalization privileges dominant groups while simultaneously oppressing 'others' (Cary, 2006). When this happens the process of «pimping families» through discourses that «talk» at them rather than to/for them lead to furthering hegemonic practices often aimed at minority families. Through interviews with families, and educators, this paper will highlight the «cultural confessions» of educators, and families who utilize non-traditional spaces to expose how prejudice and privilege have influenced their perceptions of «legitimate knowledge», legitimate spaces, and legitimate cross-cultural communication. This paper will present data obtained form Communities United for Education (CUPE) a family involvement Cómo referenciar este artículo / How to reference this article
The economic crisis has had an impact at many levels, including education. In Spain, little in-depth research has been done on its effect on the education system and the profile of those most affected. Given the difficulty of accessing reliable information on these issues, our study consists of a survey of representatives of management teams of primary education centers (6-12 years) in the Autonomous Community of Catalonia. This profile of respondents allowed us to obtain indirect knowledge of what is experienced—and in our opinion suffered—in schools, albeit more in some than in others. The results suggest that the crisis has significantly affected families and schools, but especially the most vulnerable families, most often enrolled in public schools. The factors that most influence the existence of inequalities are attributed to families, while less responsibility is assigned to schools and the education system. All this occurs in a context in which a significant reduction of economic and human resources is recognized in part of the system.
