AbstractYeld in lumber of Pinus sp. using cutting models in small sawmill. The objective of this research was to compare conventional and programmed cutting of logs pine at small sawmill. The models have been used for cutting different diametrical classes. The software MaxiTora was employed aiming to optimize logs cutting. For such, 80 logs of Pinus sp had been selected with diameters that varied from 24 cm to 33 cm, gathering four diametrical classes with 20 logs each. In each diametrical class, the logs had been separated in two lots of 10 units, then the first lot was submitted to random cutting and the second lot was submitted to programmed cutting. In relation to the random cutting system, the yield obtained in all the diametrical classes varied from 44.96% to 52.47%, and the general average corresponded to 49.01%. In relation to the programmed cutting system, the yield varied from 49.93% to 55.25% in all the diametrical classes studied, and the general average corresponded to 52.14%. Grading of logs and cutting schedule allowed to increase the sawmill efficiency in at least three percentage points. A programming sawing of logs resulted in increased yield in all diameter classes studied. Keywords: Cut of logs; yield; optimization.
AbstractThe effect of land cost in the forest profitability: a case study for Santa Catarina. This research aimed to ascertain the impact of land cost land on profitability of Pinus spp. timber production. The forestry sector has as key feature to generate financial returns in the long term, often making the investment activity in a large barrier to new business. The price of land is a variable that depends on the return of forest activity, making it necessary to know the effect that the cost of this resource will have on profitability. In order to estimate return on forest activity, it uses economic criteria, like Net Present Value (NPV) and Internal Rate of Return (IRR). The results proved to be more attractive the non-acquisition of land, with NPV of US$ 5.5804,00 and IRR of 18% per year. Considering the investment in land (purchase or lease), the economic results have suffered reduction with NPV of US$ 3.711,00 and IRR of 11% per year. The lease of land presented a NPV of US$ 3.531,00 and IRR of 13% per year. But, before using such criteria as the only decision making, other factors must be evaluated as to obtain the income of the legal reserve, the better level of use of land and a proper forest management, aiming to increase revenue with the acquisition of new products and increased production of forests. Keywords: Economic profitability; land price; forest management; pinus.
AbstractEconomic profitability of low impact management in Tropical forests: a case study. This paper had as objective to analyze economic viability of the management of low impact on tropical forests in different scenarios of investment in land and productivity of the forest. Data were obtained from a farm located in the municipality of Marcelândia, State of Mato Grosso, which harvests a tropical forest via RIL as a proxy to a sustainable forest management system and sells timber for wooden industries established in its region. The results showed that the land presents great importance in the profitability of management. Considering this investment, the Internal Rate of Return (IRR) ranged from 0,97% to 3,77%, well below the values of rate of Minimum to (MRI) of 12% per year. The Net Present Value (NPV) was very sensitive to the value of the land, ranging from R$ 10.993.508 to -R$ 43.139.242. The exclusion of the value of the land of the investment promoted a significant improvement in the IRR and NPV, demonstrating the impact that this feature is in the analysis of management project. When disregard the investment in land, the values of TIR ranged from 12,68% to 26,23% and the NPV ranged from R$ 210.240 to R$ 4.274.460. Keywords: Economic profitability; tropical forest; Forest management.
AbstractIncome analysis costs in Pinus taeda sawn wood using two methodologies. This study aimed to examine the cost structure of Pinus taeda sawn wood using two methodologies of log sawing, called conventional and optimized systems. The logs diameter ranged from 18 to 44 cm. A total of 100 logs were tested, being 50 logs divided into five diameter classes for each sawing system tested. Using the conventional sawing method, the fixed costs accounted for 12.03% of the unit production cost. From these, wages and social charges accounted for 9.22% of the total unit production cost, and for 76.61% of the fixed costs. The variable cost represented 87.97% of the total unit production cost, and the logs acquisition accounted for 84.64% of the variable cost. Using the optimized sawing system, the percentage of fixed cost increased to 14.87%, due to the decrease in the variable costs. The participation of variable cost unit accounted for 85.13% of total the unit costs, showing a reduction of 3.23%, compared to the conventional sawing method. The reduction in the total cost using the optimized sawing method was 5.12%. Keywords: Pine; logs classification; sawn models; optimization.
Cost Minimization of Forest Road Transport by Using the Integer Linear Program and Transport Cycle Time Optimization Abstract This study was about the decreasent of the costs of forest road transport, using the integer linear program and transport cycle time optimization. After obtaining all of the costs, consumed time and the current company picture, a total of three evaluations were done and are described below in settings. Setting I: The current company picture data was calculated as a comparative subsidy following the racionalization and optimization stages that are more time-consuming in the transport cycle. Setting II: This evaluation was done in terms of linear programation use, together with the loading and unloading waiting in line time racionalization. Setting III: In this evaluation, besides the linear programation use and waiting in line time racionalization, it was simultaneously used a time optimization and a foster transport speed. The acquired results were very meaningful, while the racionalization and optimization happened, the trucks rate and total cost successively decreased, resulting in better vehicles performance, and consequently, an increase in the gross and net drivers’ income. Even though there was a costs decrease and an outsiders’ income increase, wich was not enough to pay their total costs, that is, only the variable ones were totally paid and part of the outsiders’ fixed cost.
Abstract Economic profitability of the production of Pinus spp.by mesoregion in Parana. This study aimed to analyze the economic profitability of Pinus spp. in the State of Paraná, with mechanized production systems and manual, also considering different scenarios of investment in land. The data were obtained through the Department of Agriculture and Supply of Paraná (SEAB). The results showed that both manual and as mechanized presented themselves viable, when the investment in land was a decrease in the internal rate of return (IRR). The best medium economic return was found for the mechanized system without investing in land, with IRR of 22,1% per year. Considering the investment in land, the best return was found for the mechanized system, with IRR of 12,1% per year. The forest mesoregions traditionally had higher IRR, due to lower land value. There are usually regions where agriculture is not the main activity, according to the characteristics of soil and relief. The Central-East and North Pioneer had the highest IRR not considering the acquisition of land with 23.5% and 22.8% and considering the acquisition of this, under the mechanized system, 11.9 and 11.71% respectively. The differences between the returns for each meso due mainly to the price of land.
This study aimed to analyze the Brazilian competitiveness in the world market of the main non-timber forest products (NTFPs) exported by Brazil during the subperiods from 2006 to 2010, and from 2011 to 2016. The products were selected based on their relevance in the Brazilian NTFP export. In order to analyze competitiveness, we used the competitiveness matrix, which is given by the performance point of view. In the construction of this matrix, the vertical axis was represented by the Revealed Symmetric Comparative Advantage index while the horizontal axis was represented by the growth rate. The results showed that natural rubber was in the “missed opportunities” quadrant in the first period and in the “retreat” quadrant in the second period analyzed. On the other hand, honey, mate and cashew nut were positioned in the “optimum” sector in both periods, although cashew nut had showed a decrease both in the world growth rate and in the RSCA in the second period studied. In the final analysis, we concluded that Brazil is competitive in exports of honey and mate, it has been losing competitiveness in exports of cashew nuts, and is in decline as regards natural rubber exports.
