Pesquisas com palma forrageira em regiões Semiáridas são movidas pela importância de sua produção de frutos e caules suculentos (cladódios), que garantem fonte de água e nutrientes em quantidade e qualidade para as pessoas e animais destes locais. Recentemente, a busca por substâncias naturais, incluindo os metabólitos secundários de plantas (MSPs), evidenciou uma quantidade expressiva desses compostos na palma forrageira, com efeitos na alimentação e saúde. Esta revisão foi baseada em resultados de pesquisas científicas realizadas por especialistas da área com o objetivo de investigar a presença dos dos MSPs e seus benefícios na saúde e na alimentação das pessoas e animais ruminantes. Foi observado efeito positivo MSPs, como antioxidantes, agindo na prevenç ão de doenças, minimizando doenças crônicas em humanos e melhorando a produção animal, ao proporcionar aumento da ingestão de nutrientes, melhoria na fermentação ruminal, diminuição do estresse oxidativo e da excreção de metano. Portanto, a habitual utilização de palma forrageira na alimentação de ruminantes no Semiárido brasileiro e sua riqueza em MSPs requerem pesquisas que assegurem a ação destes quando presentes na dieta de ruminantes. Assim, a palma forrageira merece destaque pelos seus múltiplos benefícios em relação à saúde e alimentação, além de agregar valor aos produtos de origem animal e vegetal, contribuindo com a sustentabilidade das regiões áridas.

Objetivou-se avaliar as características bromatológicas, como matéria seca (MS), proteína bruta (PB), fibra em detergente neutro (FDN) e ácido (FDA), lignina (LIG), nutrientes digestíveis totais (NDT) e fermentativas como pH e a porcentagem do nitrogênio amoniacal em relação ao nitrogênio total (N-NH3/NT), da silagem do bagaço de laranja pré-seco (SBL) em diferentes tempos de armazenamento, bem como parâmetros relacionados as perdas de nutrientes, como as perdas por gases, por efluentes e recuperação de matéria seca. Adotou-se o delineamento experimental inteiramente casualizado, com cinco tratamentos e seis repetições, sendo os tratamentos diferentes dias de abertura dos mini-silos (10, 20, 40, 60 e 80 dias). Os valores de MS, PB, FDN, LIG, NDT, N-NH3/NT e recuperação de matéria seca não apresentaram diferenças (P>0,05) entre os dias de abertura dos mini-silos. Houve redução (P<0,05) nos teores de FDA, perdas de MS, perdas por gases e nos valores do pH. A ensilagem pode ser utilizada para conservar o bagaço de laranja pré-seco, uma vez que o processo manteve o valor nutritivo.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the animal performance, commercial cuts, and their yields within the production system, and economics of sheep production, of lambs finished in feedlots and fed with or without biodiesel co-products. A total of 40 lambs were divided into four biodiesel co-product treatment groups: a no-treatment control; peanut meal; crude glycerin; and peanut meal + crude glycerin. Animal performance did not differ (P > 0.05) among the treatment groups, where the average daily gain was close to 0.26 kg/day. Likewise, the quantitative carcass characteristics did not differ (P > 0.05) and the biological mean yield was 54.92%. Similarly, the commercial cuts and their yields did not differ (P ≥ 0.09) among the treatments. These results took into consideration the standard, age, and slaughter body weight of the animals. The economic evaluation determined that peanut meal was the best co-product for use in finishing lambs in a feedlot. Hence, all the biodiesel co-products evaluated can be used at feedlots to finish lambs without changing the variables measured.

The objective of this study was to evaluate the nutritional characteristics of meat from lambs fed diets containing 0%, 12.5% and 25.0% (dry matter (DM)) mulberry hay as a substitute for the concentrate. Twentyfour feedlot Île-de-France lambs with an average age of 60 days and bodyweight (BW) of 15 kg were fed in individual stalls and slaughtered at 32 kg BW, at approximately 130 days old. The chemical composition of the experimental diets contained, respectively, 584.4, 569.4 and 571.8 g DM/kg; 188.8, 185.1 and 184 g crude protein (CP)/kg and 29.9, 29.5 and 25.5 Mcal/kg DM for the mulberry hay inclusion levels of 0%, 12.5% and 25.0%, with a dietary forage to concentrate ratio of 50 : 50. The chemical composition of the meat was 757.9 g moisture/kg DM, 208.6 g CP/kg DM, 22.9 g crude fat/kg DM and 10.5 g ash/kg DM. Cholesterol concentration (36.07 mg/100 g) in the meat was not influenced by mulberry hay inclusion of the diet. An increase was observed in the concentrations of saturated pentadecanoic, heptadecanoic and arachidic acids; monounaturated heptadecenoic acid; and polyunsaturated α-linolenic, ɣ-linolenic and eicosapentaenoic acids. Nervonic and conjugated linoleic acid (CLA) concentrations responded quadratically, representing 3.7 g/kg and 5.9 g/kg of the meat when mulberry hay was included at 16.98% and 12.56%. Omega-3 acid concentrations increased, while the omega-3 : omega-6 ratio decreased in the meat of mulberry hay-fed animals. Inclusion of mulberry hay in lamb diets increases the amount of desirable fatty acids in their meat, whose nutritional characteristics are improved.
