ABSTRACT -Validity evidence of a scale of anxiety in lying situationsLying is an everyday act of social interaction. People lie for all sorts of reasons, and different emotions are experimented in these situations. As an integral part of the culture, lying has received a great deal of attention by researchers in the last decades. In Brazil, this new field of research has attracted interest in recent years. This study was set up to construct and validate a measure of the anxiety related to the act of lying. The 44 items elaborated to represent the construct were applied to a sample of 452 individuals. Data were submitted to exploratory factorial analysis and two factors were taken with eigenvalues over 1,0. Factor 1 covered appointments and business (10 items, α=0.81); factor 2 covered relationships (10 items, α=0.82) The method for measuring this kind of anxiety resulting from this study opens possibilities for future national research. Keywords: lying; anxiety; validity. Background Teacher–student relationships have been linked to various aspects of students’ school functioning, including social‐emotional well‐being in school, but the underlying mechanisms need more investigation. Aims In this study, we analysed longitudinal data to test if students’ classroom behavioural engagement was a potential mechanism of change that explained how teacher–student relationships affect student school satisfaction. Sample We used an archival dataset with a sample of seventh graders (ages 11–14, Mage = 12.7 year) in a middle school in the Southeastern United States. Methods Adolescents completed self‐report surveys across three waves over the course of 18 months. Results Longitudinal structural equation modelling analyses revealed that teacher–student relationships were positively associated with positive classroom engagement behaviours and school satisfaction, respectively, at each time, and positive classroom behaviours at Time 2 fully mediated the longitudinal association between teacher–student relationships (Time 1) and school satisfaction (Time 3). Conclusions Taken together, results suggested that fostering positive teacher‐student relationships to increase students’ positive classroom behaviours could be an effective pathway to promote students’ satisfaction with school. The applications of the results in educators’ and psychologists’ work, such as consultation and trainings with teachers, are discussed.
This study assessed the applicability of the Psychopathy Checklist: Youth Version in a sample of teenagers confined in socio-educational institutions. Using an Item Response Theory approach, item properties of this instrument were reviewed using the generalized partial credit model. Eight of the original twenty items of the original instrument were discarded due to low discrimination parameters. As expected, the most discriminating items in the assessment of psychiatric traits were those which affective characteristics are more typical in the description of psychopathic traits, and their larger variability among juveniles is reflected in the checklist’s answers. Item anchoring, in turn, determined five anchor levels. Conclusions based on the results are twofold: (a) a shorter version of this measure can offer the same level of information obtained from the full instrument and (b) the measure provides more information on average latent trait levels and is inadequate for clinical use.
Palavras-chave: avaliação psicológica; autorrelato; comportamento antissocial.ABSTRACT -Self-Report Instruments to Assess Anti-Social Traits: Do they Measure what they Seek to Measure? Despite many decades of discussion about the impact of skewed responses on self-report personality trait evaluations, a consensus has not yet emerged. These controversies appear greater when evaluating antisocial tendencies. Social desirability may partly explain distortion in self-report instruments. The objective of this research was to cross-reference information resulting from two evaluation situations with self-report measures. From a sample of 156 participants, authors investigated possible changes in test scores in the case that participants needed to deliver response protocols to the researchers. The results revealed partial score changes in approximately one-third of the sample, indicating the need for further research using the same methods. Keywords: psychological evaluation; self-report; antisocial behavior.
