In 2008, the Brazilian Department of Science and Technology created the INCTs (Brazilian Science and Technology Institutes). One of them was the Cancer Control INCT. Due to its importance and considering that there are different groups working together in the same area, it is important that they collaborate intensely. Envisioning an empowerment of scientific collaboration, the BRINCA project was created to support a set of analyses of the social networks from this particular INCT. These analyses were created by mining curricular and publications bases, and identifying different types of scientific relationships and areas. We were able to observe, for instance, how the interaction is amongst researchers from related areas, which researchers were more collaborative and which ones were isolated from the network. These analyzes were used by the INCT coordination to understand and act to improve scientific collaboration.
Este artigo apresenta o processo de concepção e desenvolvimento do Mapa do Tesouro, um jogo eletrônico para o ensino de Pensamento Computacional Concorrente, um conceito derivado do Pensamento Paralelo, que por sua vez, seria um componente do Pensamento Computacional apresentado por Wing. O jogo desenvolvido tem como público alvo crianças de idade entre 4 e 10 anos. Os conceitos do PC Concorrente foram incorporados em processos do jogo, com a utilização da teoria da Retórica Procedural. O jogo foi avaliado por trinta e nove crianças durante sua utilização em aulas de um curso extracurricular de Pensamento Computacional.
Abstract. Many scientific experiments deal with data-intensive applications and the orchestration of computational workflow activities. These can benefit from data parallelism exploited in parallel systems to minimize execution time. Due to its complexity, robustness and efficiency to exploit data parallelism, grid infrastructures are widely used in some e-Science areas like bioinformatics. Workflow techniques are very important to in-silico bioinformatics experiments, allowing the e-scientist to describe and enact experimental process in a structured, repeatable and verifiable way. The main purpose of this paper is to describe our experience with Tavena Workbench and PeDRo, which are part of my Grid project. Taverna is provided with a workflow toolset and enactor, allowing the specification of processing units, data transfer and execution constraints. As a data entry tool, PeDRo provides a model, a controlled vocabulary and field validations for Web Services descriptions, leveraging the knowledge associated to the workflows. The main contribution of this work is a summary of some considerations drawn by our experience with the use of these tools, emphasizing its advantages and negative aspects, together with proposals for some future improvements.
Considering the importance of cancer control in contemporary society, the INCT (National Institute of Science and Technology) for Cancer Control was established in 2008 as a national body under the Ministry of Health of Brazil. However, given its importance and considering a possible dispersion and the peculiar behavior of the academic environment, a series of analyses, as well as balancing, was conducted in the social networks that represent this INCT in particular. We will see not only a history of Social Networks, but also their application, importance, and peculiarities in the medical context. Further details will be shown in the project proposal BRINCA, its architecture, and the current state of our research.
