The Northeastern Mata Atlântica freshwater ecoregion (NMAF) includes part of the eastern Brazilian coastal drainages, has high level of fish endemism and great biogeographic significance. A taxonomic inventory of freshwater fishes from 25 drainages of the NMAF ecoregion and a biogeographic analysis using the Parsimony Analysis of Endemicity (PAE) method were carried out. A total of 192 native species was listed. The PAE method was applied to 24 basins and 37 species, resulting in five equally parsimonious area diagrams. The strict consensus diagram indicates the existence of two main groups of basins throughout the NMAF ecoregion. These groups were denominated: North Group and Central-South Group. The CentralSouth Group shows a basal polytomy composed by two Groups (Central Group and South Group) plus the rio Itapemirim basin. The North Group is composed by eight drainages from the rio Sergipe to the rio Paraguaçu, the Central Group by five drainages from the rio Cachoeira to the rio Jequitinhonha, and the South Group by nine drainages from the rio Buranhém to the rio Doce. Comments about the species distribution and the fish fauna shared with adjacent ecoregions are provided. We also present a comparison of the hypothesis of river relationships proposed herein with published phylogenetic hypotheses that include taxa relevant to this study.A ecorregião Mata Atlântica Nordeste (NMAF) inclui parte das drenagens costeiras do leste do Brasil, tem alto grau de endemismo de peixes e grande significado biogeográfico. Um levantamento taxonômico da ictiofauna de água doce de 25 drenagens da ecorregião NMAF e uma análise biogeográfica utilizando o método de Análise de Parcimônia de Endemismo (PAE) foram realizados. Um total de 192 espécies nativas foi listado. O método PAE foi aplicado a 24 bacias e 37 espécies, resultando em cinco diagramas de áreas igualmente parcimoniosos. O diagrama de consenso estrito indica a existência de dois grupos de bacias principais ao longo da ecorregião NMAF. Estes grupos foram denominados: Grupo Norte e Grupo Centro-Sul. O Grupo Centro-Sul apresenta uma politomia basal composta por dois grupos (Grupo Centro e Grupo Sul) mais a bacia do rio Itapemirim. O Grupo Norte é formado por oito drenagens entre o rio Sergipe e o rio Paraguaçu, o Grupo Centro por cinco drenagens entre o rio Cachoeira e o rio Jequitinhonha e o Grupo Sul por nove drenagens entre o rio Buranhém e rio Doce. Comentários sobre a distribuição das espécies e a fauna compartilhada com ecorregiões adjacentes são fornecidos. Apresentamos também uma comparação da hipótese de relação aqui obtida com filogenias publicadas para alguns táxons relevantes ao presente estudo.

Abstract:The Recôncavo Sul basin is a portion of the coastal river drainages of Eastern Brazil almost entirely included in the "Baixo Sul" region of Bahia State, and is limited at its northern and northwestern borders by the rio Paraguaçu basin and at its southern and southwestern borders by the rio de Contas basin. In this study a total of 41 strictly freshwater fish species were recorded, belonging to 28 genera, 12 families, and six orders (18 Characiformes, 13 Siluriformes, five Perciformes, two Cyprinodontiformes, two Gymnotiformes, and one Synbranchiformes). Ten possibly undescribed, four endemic, and four introduced species were recorded in the area of study. One species occurring in the area is considered threatened with extinction. An identification key to the species known for the Recôncavo Sul is provided, as well as comments about the taxonomy and distribution of some species. Due to its comparatively high diversity and relatively pristine condition the rio das Almas drainage is suggested as a key area for conservation. Resumo: A bacia do Recôncavo Sul faz parte das drenagens costeiras do Leste do Brasil, está quase inteiramente incluída na região do Baixo Sul do Estado da Bahia, é limitada ao norte e noroeste pela bacia do rio Paraguaçu e ao sul e sudoeste pelo rio de Contas. No presente estudo, um total de 41 espécies de peixes estritamente de água doce foi registrado, pertencentes a 28 gêneros, 12 famílias e seis ordens (18 Characiformes, 13 Siluriformes, cinco Perciformes, duas Cyprinodontiformes, duas Gymnotiformes e uma Synbranchiformes). Foram encontradas dez espécies possivelmente ainda não descritas, quatro espécies endêmicas e quatro introduzidas na área de estudo. Uma espécie presente na área está ameaçada de extinção. Uma chave de identificação para as espécies conhecidas para o Recôncavo Sul é apresentada, assim como comentários sobre a taxonomia e distribuição de algumas espécies. Devido à diversidade comparativamente alta e condições ambientais relativamente preservadas, a bacia do rio das Almas é indicada como uma área chave para conservação. Analysis of morphometric and meristic data from specimens obtained from various river basins along the distribution of Nematocharax venustus revealed intraspecific variation among geographically isolated populations. A comparative analysis of these data with data from the original description of N. costai, in addition to data obtained from the holotype and topotypes of the species, showed broad overlap and absence of morphological features supporting the recognition of two species within Nematocharax. Characters previously used to distinguish N. costai from N. venustus, such as presence of hooks or spinules on dorsal and pelvic fins, number of hooks on anal-fin rays, occurrence of a pink horizontal mark on the caudal peduncle, number of supraneurals, and coloration of the pelvic-fin filament, are not useful to distinguish the two putative species. Thus, N. costai is considered herein as a junior synonym of N. venustus. Presence of a complete lateral line and length of fin-filaments of N. venustus are briefly discussed and a current overview of the distribution of the species is given. In view of the proposed synonymy of a so recently described species and aiming to avoid problems of similar nature in the future, we also take the opportunity to reinforce herein the importance of the examination of large population samples and of intraspecific variation of secondary sexual features.

Two new species of Characidium, one from the rio Pardo basin, and another from the rio Paraguaçu basin, Bahia, Brazil, are described. The first new species is distinguished from its congeners by having conspicuous black vertical traces on body, formed by the concentration of melanophores along posterior margin of scales. The species further differs from most congeners by the presence of a conspicuous 3-shaped black blotch on the caudal fin and isthmus not covered by scales. The other new species is distinguished from congeners by having irregular dark blotches on dorsum alternating elongation to one or the other side of body, usually not connected to lateral blotches. The species can be further characterized by the absence of conspicuous blotches or bars on fins and the presence of secondary sexual dimorphism, such as pelvic fins of mature males longer than in females and with bony hooks. Duas novas espécies de Characidium, uma da bacia do rio Pardo e outra da bacia do rio Paraguaçu, Bahia, Brasil, são descritas. A primeira espécie nova distingue-se das congêneres por ter traços verticais pretos e conspícuos nas laterais do corpo, formados pela concentração de melanóforos ao longo da margem posterior das escamas. A espécie difere ainda da maioria das congêneres pela presença de faixa preta conspícua em forma de 3 na nadadeira caudal e istmo não coberto por escamas. A outra espécie nova se distingue das congêneres por ter manchas dorsais irregulares alternando alongamento para um ou outro lado do corpo, a maioria não conectada às manchas laterais. A espécie pode ser ainda caracterizada pela ausência de manchas ou barras conspícuas nas nadadeiras e pela presença de dimorfismo sexual secundário, tais como nadadeiras pélvicas dos machos maduros mais longas que em fêmeas e com espinhos ósseos.

Two new Astyanax species, A. vermilion, from rio Almada and rio Cachoeira, and A. burgerai, from rio Almada, Bahia State, Brazil, are described. Astyanax vermilion is distinguished from most of its congeners and from all other Astyanax species known from northeastern Brazilian drainages by having distal portion of pelvic fins dark, a combination of sexually dimorphic characters, posteroventral portion of body and fins (except pectoral) reddish in life, and inconspicuous humeral and caudal spots. It also differs by having highest body depth just anterior of dorsal-fin origin, 32-34 lateral-line scales, and presence of one or two maxillary teeth. Astyanax burgerai is diagnosed by the presence of two vertically elongated humeral blotches, absence of a conspicuous and broad dark midlateral stripe (at least on anterior half of body), body highest along vertical slightly behind midlength of pectoral fin, 31-34 lateral-line scales, and two or three teeth on premaxillary outer series.Duas espécies novas de Astyanax, A. vermilion, do rio Almada e rio Cachoeira, e A. burgerai, do rio Almada, Estado da Bahia, Brasil, são descritas. Astyanax vermilion distingue-se da maioria de suas congêneres e de todas as espécies de Astyanax conhecidas das drenagens do Nordeste do Brasil por ter porção distal da nadadeira pélvica escurecida, uma combinação de caracteres sexualmente dimórficos, porção póstero-ventral do corpo e nadadeiras (exceto peitoral) avermelhadas em vida e manchas umeral e caudal inconspícuas. Difere também por ter maior altura do corpo imediatamente anterior à origem da nadadeira dorsal, 32-34 escamas na linha lateral e presença de um ou dois dentes no maxilar. Astyanax burgerai é diagnosticada pela presença de duas manchas umerais alongadas verticalmente, ausência de faixa lateral larga e conspícua, ao menos na metade anterior do corpo, maior altura do corpo na vertical situada levemente posterior à metade da nadadeira peitoral, 31-34 escamas na linha lateral e dois ou três dentes na série externa do pré-maxilar.

A new species of Hyphessobrycon Durbin is described from tributaries of the rio Grande (rio São Francisco basin) draining east to the Serra Geral de Goiás, of the rio São Domingos (upper rio Tocantins basin) and rio do Sono basins (middle rio Tocantins basin). Hyphessobrycon diastatos can be diagnosed from its congeners by the absence of humeral spot, 15-18 branched analfin rays, 1-3 maxillary conical to tricuspid teeth, a relatively well-defined dark caudal-peduncle spot, and elongation of dorsaland anal-fin rays in mature males. The biogeographical significance of the distribution of the new species is evaluated and discussed.Uma espécie nova de Hyphessobrycon Durbin é descrita dos tributários do rio Grande (bacia do rio São Francisco) que drenam a leste a Serra Geral de Goiás, das bacias dos rios São Domingos (bacia do alto rio Tocantins) e rio do Sono (bacia do médio rio Tocantins). Hyphessobrycon diastatos pode ser diagnosticada de seus congêneres pela ausência de mancha umeral, 15-18 raios ramificados na nadadeira anal, 1-3 dentes maxilares cônicos ou tricuspidados, uma mancha escura relativamente bem definida no pedúnculo caudal e alongamento das nadadeiras dorsal e anal em machos maduros. O significado biogeográfico da distribuição da espécie nova é avaliado e discutido.

A new species of Astyanax from the Rio Paraguaçu basin, Bahia, Brazil, is described. This new species is distinguished from its congeners known to occur in Brazilian drainages by the presence of small bony hooks on all fins of mature males. Furthermore, the new species can be diagnosed by its colour pattern, which consists of a unique vertically elongated humeral blotch, a conspicuous dark drop-shaped horizontal blotch over the caudal peduncle, tapering anteriorly and not extending to the median caudal-fin rays, and by the absence of a conspicuous broad dark midlateral stripe. The new species differs further by having the greatest body depth just anterior to the dorsal-fin origin, 32-35 perforated scales in the lateral line and a reduced number of branched anal-fin rays (16-20). Apparently, the new species does not fit into any species complex of Astyanax. The occurrence of bony hooks on all fins of Astyanax is discussed.

Cyphocharax pinnilepis, a species of curimatid characiform apparently endemic to the Rio de Contas system in Bahia, Brazil, is described as new. It is only the sixth member of the Curimatidae known from the coastal rivers of Brazil across the expanse from south of the mouth of the Amazon River to the state of São Paulo, but the third curimatid species from the Rio de Contas. The basis for the assignment of the species to Cyphocharax is discussed, and it is diagnosed from congeners on details of pigmentation, the pattern of scales on the lobes of the caudal fin, meristics, and morphometrics.Cyphocharax pinnilepis, uma espé cie de caraciforme curimatídeo aparentemente endêmica do sistema do Rio de Contas da Bahia, Brasil, é descrita como nova. É apenas o sexto integrante de Curimatidae conhecido dos rios costeiros do Brasil, do sul da foz do Amazonas ao Estado de São Paulo, mas o terceiro curimatídeo do Rio de Contas. A inclusão da espé cie em Cyphocharax é discutida e esta é diagnosticada de suas congêneres com base em detalhes de pigmentação, no padrão de escamas nos lobos na nadadeira caudal, dados merísticos e morfomé tricos.
