James Clerk Maxwell formulated a theory of Electromagnetism from dynamic properties of a fluid. According to these calculations, it is possible to identify principles, both physical and mathematical, on which the theory is based. The most important property is the rotational elasticity of the fluid, introduced by James MacCullagh. However the theory left loopholes, the most striking of which are the nature of the electric current and the treatment of conductors. Although we no longer accept the theory, it established categories of the Eletromagnetic science. A byproduct of this paper is the detailing of the calculations and arguments invoked by Maxwell.
Leonhard Euler derived equations of motion for both (in modern terminology) point mass mechanics and analytic mechanics. In order to derive the equations, some dynamic premise has to be introduced; this is the "principle of mechanics". It stems from the recognition that infinitesimal motions are uniformly accelerated. Then, using Galileo Galilei's theorem on the fall, mathematical relations among differentials acquire physical meaning, and become the "principle of mechanics".
In a letter to Robert Hooke, Isaac Newton drew the orbit of a mass moving under a constant attracting central force. The drawing of the orbit may indicate how and when Newton developed dynamic categories. Some historians claim that Newton used a method contrived by Hooke; others that he used some method of curvature. We prove that Hooke’s method is a second-order symplectic area-preserving algorithm, and the method of curvature is a first-order algorithm without special features; then we integrate the Hamiltonian equations. Integration by the method of curvature can also be done, exploring the geometric properties of curves. We compare three methods: Hooke’s method, the method of curvature and a first-order method. A fourth-order algorithm sets a standard of comparison. We analyze which of these methods best explains Newton’s drawing.
