Body image is multidimensional, dynamic, and entirely linked to the body in motion, which entails relevant bodily concerns in the routine of professional dancers, who need to maintain their body aesthetics constantly. The objective was summarizing the scientific production on the body image of professional dancers and to understand how they perceive it. This review is composed by seven studies that investigated professional dancers of classical ballet, jazz and contemporary dance. The results demonstrate that even though they are lean and had appropriate body mass index, professional dancers are dissatisfied with their body and wish to be thinner, that is, professional dancers constitute a risk group for the development of eating disorders. Keywords: dancing; body image; feeding and eating disorders. ARTIGO DE REVISÃO | REVIEW ARTICLE RESUMO ABSTRACTThis systematic review aimed to analyze the original studies that investigated the level of physical activity (PA) self-reported, and the benefits and associated factors among women in treatment or after treatment for breast cancer (BC). In this way, the search was performed in electronic databases PubMed, Web of Science, Science Direct, OVID and Health Virtual Library used the descriptors [physical activity] AND [breast cancer] in English, Spanish and Portuguese. 21 studies published in English were included, between 2004 and 2014. We could find that most of the women did not reached the recommendations of PA posttreatment, there were no findings related to the prevalence of PA during treatment of BC . Noted an association between PA practice level with age, BMI, education, ethnicity, BC stage, menopause, associated comorbidities, smoking, body image, depressive symptoms and presence of fatigue. Higher incidence of PA to walk was associated with improved quality of life (QOL), decreased level of fatigue and depressive symptoms.
Movement is a fundamental element of dance, and the dancer's body is the raw material through which the art of dance is expressed; for this, it demands the utmost discipline in the pursuit of technical and artistic excellence. To meet the professional demands, dancers are subjected to strenuous training routines, which can lead to the development of injuries in this environment. The objective was to examine the etiology, main affected segments, prevalence, and instruments used to evaluate the lesions in studies with professional dancers and/ or in comparison with similar populations. We selected articles published in the last decade in the databases BIREME, LILACS, MEDLINE EBSCO, WEB OF SCIENCE, SCOPUS (Elsevier), and PubMed, with cross-sectional, observational cohort and case control design published in Portuguese, English, or Spanish. Systematic reviews, case studies, dissertations, theses, book chapters, cross-referenced articles, and studies published outside of the last decade were not included. The search used combinations of the terms "dancing* and athletic injuries* and musculoskeletal* and pain*". A principal investigator and two reviewers conducted the survey and analyzed all the potentially relevant articles, initially by the abstract and title. Twelve articles were included, with 1,149 participants (965 professional dancers of classical ballet, modern dance, contemporary dance, and breakdance, 104 amateur dancers, and 80 elite athletes). Nine studies found simultaneous lesions with emphasis on the foot and ankle (n=4), upper and lower limbs lesions (n=4) and lower and upper limb joints (n=1). Other studies have found lesions in the anterior cruciate ligament (n=3). There was no agreement regarding the instruments for detecting lesions in professional, pre-professional, and amateur dancers. There was a prevalence of studies aimed at classical ballet modality, evidencing a higher frequency of lower limb involvement in professional dancers. The search for movement plasticity causes dancers to seek to achieve and maintain low body weight, which can lead to dissatisfaction with their body image and to eating disorders. The purpose of this study was to analyze body image satisfaction and the presence of eating disorders and associated factors in professional ballroom dancers in Brazil. Three hundred and twenty dancers took part via a self-reported questionnaire. The majority of the dancers proved to be dissatisfied with their body image; the increase with age of body mass index (BMI) influenced the dissatisfaction due to excess weight. It is concluded that body image is associated with eating disorders, age, and BMI in ballroom dancers.
Ballroom dance consists of a modality characterized by fast and dynamic movements performed in pairs, aiming at technical and artistic excellence. Objective: To analyze the prevalence, characteristics, and factors associated with injuries in professional ballroom dancers, considering possible differences between sexes. Method: 320 professional dancers of both sexes with a mean age of 31.48±8.63 years, who were in professional companies and/ or dance schools from five regions of Brazil. The measurement was performed through an online self-administered questionnaire about general information and injuries. Results: A high frequency of musculoskeletal injuries (80.0%) was observed, especially osteoarticular ones (52.4%). In women, the lower limbs were the anatomical location most reported (31.1%) and the knee in male dancers (28.7%). Overweight men, with more than 11 years of dance practice, who danced in companies and also performed other physical activities, were more likely to have injuries. However, women were less likely to have injuries when they were overweight and more likely when they practiced other dance modalities besides ballroom dancing. Conclusions: Approximately 64.1% of ballroom dancers suffered an injury throughout their professional careers. For men, being overweight as well as the search for complementary activities to the physical training routine for both sexes, seem to influence the occurrence of injuries. Identification of the factors associated with injuries in ballroom dancers contributes both to preventive actions and to rehabilitation processes, favoring a healthy and safe career for professionals involved in this practice.
