Changes in tropical land use have profound effects on soil organic matter (SOM) status. It has been suggested that alterations in the different fractions of SOM are more effective in indicating changes in soil use than total soil organic matter content. The main objective of this study was to investigate changes in the content of humic substances in an Ultisol under different land uses, in the northeast region of Brazil. Soil samples were collected from the 0-10 and 10-30 cm layers, in three agricultural areas (conventional coconut orchard, integrated coconut orchard, and citrus orchard). A native forest soil was used as reference. Organic C and total N were determined to characterize the SOM. Humic substances were chemically fractionated into fulvic acid, humic acid, and humin, based on solubility in acid and alkali. Significant loss (47.5%) of soil organic matter was observed in the surface layers of the conventional coconut and citrus orchards, compared to the native forest. There was increased SOM content in the integrated coconut orchard soil, due to the presence of cover crops as well as management of crop residues. However, in the subsurface soil of the integrated coconut orchard, cultivation modified the distribution of the more labile fractions of the soil organic matter, as measured by the ratio between humic and fulvic acids (>1.0), indicating a substantial loss of fulvic acids. The degree of humification was in the range 40-97%. The distributions of the soil organic matter fractions varied in the ranges 12-32.5% (fulvic acids), 12-34.5% (humic acids), and 40-69.5% (humin).
Palavras-chave: Cucumis melo L. ambiente protegido, água salinaMelon yield in a hydroponic system with wastewater from desalination plant added in the nutrient solution ABSTRACTTo use of waster water from desalting in the hydroponic cultivation, an experiment was carried out at the Department of Environmental Science of the Universidade Federal Rural do Semi-Árido-UFERSA, in the municipal district of Mossoró-RN, in pots with substrates of coconut fiber under greenhouse conditions. The experimental design was in randomized blocks, with three repetitions. Treatments were composed of five levels of salinity of the nutrient solution obtained with, and without, dilution of the waster water from desalting (2.1, 3.6, 4.9, 6.0 and 7.0 dS m -1 ). The variables plant height, stem diameter, leaf area, mean weight of fruit and total and marketable yield were detemined. In general, the variables decreased linearly with the increase of the salinity of the nutrient solution, showing that the salinity with waster water from desalting reduces the absorption of water by the plants due to the osmotic effect.
The design was completely randomized with 9 treatments and 3 replications, arranged in a 3x3 factorial design (levels of salinity x starting time of the application of salinity), and control. The salinity of the nutrient solution produced by the saline water, significantly reduced the fresh weight of shoot, dry weight of shoots, and fruit production of tomato. The stage of the application of water in the nutrient solution only reduced the dry matter of shoot and fruit yield of tomato, when applied from 7 DAT, while the interaction of these factors did not produce significant effects for the variables.
Hydroponic lettuce production on coconut fiber using desalination wastewaterThe scarcity of good quality water has led to the necessity of using wastewater for irrigation in the semi-arid region of Brazil. This greenhouse experiment was carried out in the Universidade Federal Rural do SemiÁrido, located in Mossoro-RN, aiming to evaluate the use of wastewater from the reverse osmosis desalination process on lettuce (Lactuca sativa L) production. The experiment was conducted in a randomized block design with three replications. Treatments were arranged in a 5 x 2 factorial scheme: five levels of salinity (1.1, 2.4, 3.6, 4,7 and 5.7 dS m -1 ) in the nutrient solution (according to the proportions of desalination of the wastewater in the nutrient solution: 0, 25%, 50%, 75% and 100%), and two lettuce cultivars: Verônica and Quatro Estações. Seedlings were planted in trays filled with coconut fiber as a substrate and allowed to growth for 24 days under hydroponic conditions, with different levels of salinity in the nutrient solution. The nutrient solution treatments were provided by a continuous flow rate drip irrigation system.
