Purpose -The purpose of this paper is to identify if the open Brazilian companies that have family control manage their accounting results in a negative way, and if this influence is in a positive sense of pushing the results down, that is, worsening their present profits due to future results. Design/methodology/approach -The empirical investigation is developed using as a sample 123 Brazilian companies listed on BM&FBovespa, totaling 1.353 observations for a period of 11 years (2000)(2001)(2002)(2003)(2004)(2005)(2006)(2007)(2008)(2009)(2010). Data analysis is conducted by means of regression with panel data, method of ordinary least squares (OLS), and random effects. Findings -First, it was found that family-type companies show lower profits compared to profits earned by non-family companies. Nevertheless, it was observed that family businesses have negative discretionary accruals higher than those submitted by non-family firms, and that family control has a positive influence on this type of earnings management.Research limitations/implications -The article provides an extension to earlier work focused on the relationship between family ownership and earnings management results. Practical implications -The paper provides a more critical look at family property, especially as regards the quality of their accounting information. Originality/value -The study not only investigates whether family control is positively related to discretionary accruals of Brazilian companies; it also checks the influence of family property on the production of negative accruals -"take a bath".
Desempenho econômico e a responsabilidade social corporativa: uma contribuição para a análise da relação destas variáveis no caso das maiores companhias abertas Brasileiras investigating the 100 largest publicly traded companies by market capitalization, listed and not listed on the BM&FBovespa ISE. By applying logistic regression results indicate a positive and significant relationship between economic performance and corporate social reputation. This result is consistent with the findings of previous research on the subject. Thus, it is concluded that for the case of the 100 largest publicly traded Brazilian companies, applies the theory of the relationship between economic performance, reputation, corporate social and economic performance. It is inferred that because some of the companies surveyed are already in the international market, reputation corporate social strategy can be used to improve the return on their shares and thus to expand their businesses.
For the data analysis, the techniques of descriptive statistics and network analysis were applied. The results relating to the equity interests showed the occurrence of two distinct structural forms; one in which companies cluster around themselves, with dispersed shareholders, called "others" as the network's central author, but with weak ties, and another, which occurred in a few companies (CPFL Geração de Energia S.A.; LF Tel S.A.; UPTICK Participações S.A), which presented a high concentration in the ownership structure. It is concluded that corporate and personal networks in the equity interests of the social capital of public utilities and telecommunications (fixed and mobile) companies listed on the BMF&Bovespa have different social and structural aspects. This research helps further understanding of the ownership structure in Brazil, which differs in these companies due to investments in specific long-term assets (transmission lines) granted to the private sector.
