Dans le cadre d’une évaluation nationale en mathématiques en fin d’école primaire (élèves de 10-11 ans) en France nous proposons, dans cet article, d’étudier plus particulièrement les items relevant de la résolution de problèmes afin de déterminer quelles compétences et connaissances sont véritablement évaluées par un dispositif comportant une grande part de QCM (questions à choix multiple). À cette fin, nous serons amenées à utiliser un outil didactique décliné en facteurs de complexité et de compétence, mais aussi à considérer les stratégies que les élèves utilisent pour répondre à ce type d’évaluation. Dans une expérimentation menée parallèlement à ce bilan, nous examinerons l’activité de résolution de problèmes suivant deux modalités de questionnement (fermé ou plus classique) afin de déterminer si elles ont une incidence sur les résultats des élèves. Nous souhaitons ainsi appréhender l’activité de résolution de problèmes en mathématiques aussi bien d’un point de vue cognitif (notamment avec les rétroactions rendues possibles par les QCM) que d’un point de vue institutionnel, en tenant compte de l’influence de différentes modalités d’évaluation.
L'enjeu de cet article est d'interroger la singularité de deux dispositifs de recherche/formation, constitutifs d'un même LéA. Nous interrogeons la tension entre visée épistémique (produire des résultats de recherche) et pragmatique (participer au développement professionnel et produire des ressources pour la formation). Ces dispositifs sont restitués dans l'économie générale du LéA EvalNumC2, puis chacun d'eux est décrit à partir du cadre théorique qui sous-tend son architecture. Le premier dispositif concerne une approche en didactique des mathématiques, et le second dispositif concerne l'analyse du travail d'un enseignant polyvalent. Ils sont ensuite comparés relativement 1) à l'objet d'investigation commun aux préoccupations des chercheurs et des enseignants (l'évaluation des connaissances mathématiques des élèves), 2) aux outils des collectifs qui y sont exploités et 3) aux modes de collaboration qui existent entre les acteurs.
La validité d’une évaluation est appréhendée dans cet article selon deux approches didactiques complémentaires : l’une anthropologique et épistémo-didactique, l’autre psycho-didactique. Nous montrons et illustrons en quoi cette conception renouvelée de la validité qui articule qualitatif et quantitatif permet d’outiller les concepteurs et utilisateurs d’évaluations, qu’elles soient internes ou externes : un premier exemple est donné en mathématiques avec l’étude d’une évaluation à grande échelle et un second exemple en lecture-compréhension de textes, en lien avec un dispositif de formation d’enseignants.
Notre recherche explore les procédures d’élèves de 7-8 ans pour déterminer mentalement la somme de deux entiers. Nous nous appuyons sur des éléments théoriques sur le calcul mental et les numérations écrite et orale pour déterminer les connaissances qui peuvent être mobilisées dans de telles procédures ; nous illustrons enfin avec quelques exemples la complexité à les inférer à partir des réponses, des gestes et du discours des élèves.
Deux études internationales évaluant les connaissances des élèves en mathématiques occupent une place importante dans le paysage éducatif mondial : celles du Programme international pour le suivi des acquis des élèves (PISA) et de la Trends in International Mathematics and Science Study (TIMSS). Si ces études sont accompagnées d’une littérature abondante décrivant leurs cadres, et si de nombreuses recherches en édumétrie, en sociologie ou encore en sciences de l’éducation ont régulièrement été menées, quel regard la didactique des mathématiques peut-elle porter sur ces études ? Après avoir présenté succinctement les cadres de ces deux évaluations, nous exploitons deux approches didactiques distinctes, basées sur l’analyse a priori des tâches pour analyser le contenu de l’évaluation et pour réinterpréter les résultats des élèves. Couplée à une analyse statistique implicative, la première, didactique et cognitive, apporte un regard neuf sur les résultats du PISA et permet de mener des comparaisons entre pays. La seconde approche, située dans le cadre de la théorie anthropologique du didactique, s’intéresse davantage au contenu de la TIMSS et à la répartition des questions au regard d’une organisation mathématique de référence.
