This article analyses the situation of communication research in Spain. First, a history of the development of communication research is presented. Then the authors describe and analyse the status of research at the beginning of the 21st century and present the opinion of researchers themselves concerning this situation. Subsequently, using the Delphi method, an analysis of the panorama of research in Spain is offered from the perspective of a group of Spanish researchers and lecturers in the field. Finally, the future prospects are discussed for communication theory and research in this European country. In general, this work aims to reflect on the state of communication theory as a social and humanistic science, in those democratic countries from the first world which incorporated the study of communication theory in their universities in the 1970s, based on an observation of the Spanish situation. Consequently, the issues analysed, the epistemological precept and the solutions proposed can be extrapolated to all those zones where the discipline is currently in a complete phase of consolidation, definition and maturity.
Our research utilizes a gender studies perspective in the context of television fiction research to investigate the models of the forms of masculinity and relationships that arise through the analysis of the Catalan TV series Porca Misèria/Pig Misery (Joan 2004). The methodology followed is to carry out a quantitative and qualitative textual film analysis of the male characters based on a scale, in order to evaluate the components of the love relationships. The conclusion that emerges provides four different modes of masculinity (dialogic, narcissistic, caring and Don Juan masculinity) and, accordingly, four different styles of heterosexual love relationships: ‘bonding love’; ‘inclusive love’; ‘caring love’ and ‘Donjuanesque love’. This constitutes a further step towards the future portrayal of men in TV series that manages to steer clear of clichéd representations and is more in tune with the new social realities of masculinity.

Despite the evidence concerning the substantial greenhouse gases emissions resulting from animal-based food production, climate policies and institutions around the world have barely made an issue of this link until very recently. To better understand this lack of attention, we focus on the discursive role of think tanks as prominent but under researched actors attempting to shape public policy. This contribution examines whether European think tanks have discussed animal-based diets regarding climate change policies and mitigation actions. We conduct a frame analysis study of 110 European think tanks, encoding all their available online output in English related to the link between global heating and animal-based food. We conclude that European think tanks have contributed to a manufacturing of ignorance regarding the impact our dietary choices have on the climate. Ideological reasons related to economic, anthropocentric and patriarchal worldviews explain this role.
