Il est courant d'accorder à l'Etat et aux politiques d'immigration un rôle prépondérant dans les formes d'intégration des immigrants dans la société d'accueil. On essaie ici de montrer que d'autres institutions et acteurs sociaux jouent un rôle important, en particulier dans le cas de la France, où l'action volontaire de l'Etat central a plutôt contribué à déstructurer les identités « ethniques », régionales ou immigrées. On développe ici le rôle joué par les syndicats ces vingt dernières années dans le recul des discriminations économiques, l'accès à une forme de citoyenneté dans l'entreprise, la socialisation à la classe ouvrière. Les identités collectives dont participent les immigrés sont « à géométrie variable » selon la nature des enjeux et les espaces d'interaction. On ne peut notamment assimiler les processus d'acculturation et de regroupements qui se déroulent dans l'univers professionnel et dans la sphère de l'habitat.
