-(Vascular epiphytes in Subtropical Ombrophilous Forest fragments, Curitiba, Paraná, Brazil). This study was carried out in 14 fragments of Araucaria Forest, with Cfb climate, precipitation 1,450 mm/year and annual average temperature 16.7 ºC. 96 native and ten exotic species were recorded in 21 families. Orchidaceae (35 species), Polypodiaceae (14 spp.) and Bromeliaceae (12 spp.) were the richest families. The number of native species in the fragments varied from ten to 64. Vascular epiphyte richness of Subtropical Ombrophilous Forest is lower than in tropical coastal rainforests but higher than in Brazilian seasonal forests. Climate type, forest coverage and degree and intensity of fragment disturbance are the most important aspects that interfere with the maintenance and expansion of epiphytic communities.Key words -floristic composition, subtropical forest, vascular epiphytes, urban forests RESUMO -(Epífitos vasculares em fragmentos de Floresta Ombrófila Mista, Curitiba, Paraná, Brasil).
Ecological restoration of trees is often constrained by limited knowledge of the biology, propagation and management requirements of individual species. Consequently, restoration initiatives rarely incorporate less well-known species or those that are difficult to source and grow. We describe challenges associated with the restoration of threatened trees in the Araucaria Forest of southern Brazil, and analyse the effectiveness of methods used to define target species, identify seed sources and generate information on the phenology of rare or threatened tree species. A review of secondary data identified 71 rare or threatened taxa as targets for seed collection. We then surveyed 68.7 km of trails in 26 forest remnants, identifying and mapping 1,027 seed-producing trees of 38 species. Surveys confirmed the scarcity of several tree species (including seven species with an abundance of <0.04 individuals per km), and nine species showed no signs of fruiting during 3 years of phenological monitoring. These findings, together with limited knowledge and application of optimal seed collection methods, are significant factors impeding the recovery of these species within their natural habitat. Wider application of the results of this case study could support restoration of the Araucaria Forest with seedlings from a wider diversity of species.
AbstractTree species from an Atlantic Forest remnant in Antonina, Paraná, Southern Brazil. Aiming to support new vegetation dynamics and climate change studies, a floristic survey of the tree species was conducted in the Atlantic Forest at Rio Cachoeira Natural Reserve, in Antonina municipality, Southern Brazil. The survey was intensified in 187 permanent plots, representing 23.5 ha of sampled area. The floristic collection was represented by 306 tree species, distributed in 68 families. Zoochory was the most common dispersion syndrome (81.7%). According to the shadow tolerance, 50.3% of the species were tolerant, while non-tolerant species were 49.7%. Wide geographical distribution species represented almost half of all this floristic set (48.4%).Threatened species were 6.9% of all species found (21), a higher value than that one reported to other studies on this forest type (around 2%). This situation shows the effects of continuous pressure on the forest, as the over exploitation of the vegetation through the years, associated to the forest damage by fragmentation and habitat loss process leads to the higher risks for species conservation on this biome. Keywords: Ombrophilous Dense Forest; floristic composition; threatened species; dispersion ways.
MARQUES, C.M.M., ZWIENER, V.P., RAMOS, F.M., BORGO, M., MARQUES, R. Forest structure and species composition along a successional gradient of Lowland Atlantic Forest in Southern Brazil. Biota http://dx.doi.org/10.1590/1676-06032014009414Abstract: The Lowland Forest is one of the most disturbed and fragile ecosystems in the Atlantic Forest biome, yet little is known regarding its successional trajectory and resilience. We evaluated changes in species assemblages and forest structure of the canopy and understory along a successional gradient (young 21-yrs old forest, immature 34-yrs old forest and late successional 59-yrs old forest) aiming to assess changes in species composition and successional trajectory of different strata of secondary forests. A 0.1 ha plot (ten 10x10 m sub-plots) from each forest stand was surveyed for trees and shrubs with a diameter at breast height (DBH) > 4.8 cm (canopy) and for individuals with heights > 1 m and DBH , 4.8 cm (understory). A total of 3,619 individuals from 82 plant species were sampled. The successional gradient was marked by a unidirectional increase in species richness and a bidirectional pattern of density changes (increasing from young to immature forest and decreasing from immature to late successional forest). Community assemblages were distinct in the three forests and two strata; indicator species were only weakly shared among stands. Thus, each successional forest and stratum was observed to be a unique plant community. Our results suggest slight predictability of community assemblages in secondary forests, but a relatively fast recovery of forest structure. AbstractProtected Areas in Curitiba, PR, Brazil, as carbon sinks.Conservation of forest’s fragments is extremely necessary to ensure maintenance of biodiversity and storage of carbon. There are currently 52 protected areas (PAs) in Curitiba municipality, located in Parana State – Brazil, with remnants of Araucaria Forest at different stages of conservation contributing to maintenance of biodiversity, improving quality of life of residents and also assisting in prevention of climate change as the aforementioned areas store large amounts of carbon in a range of forest components. In 2009, Curitiba conducted a research to estimate the carbon stock of forest fragments. The present research was carried out in order to evaluate the importance of these fragments in the maintenance of carbon stocks, associated to the preservation of biodiversity, which may be an incentive for public investment in these areas and encouragement to other municipalities for the creation and maintenance of PAs. Based on available information on the carbon contained in forest remnants of the city, it was identified that the total of those areas involves a stock of 1,159,259.60 t C, which reinforces the importance of maintaining native vegetation even in urban environment.

Feijoa sellowiana (O.Berg) O. Berg is an ornamental and food plant, as well as an important species for ecological restoration and landscaping that still requires much research before consolidating it in the tropical market. To understand if the implementation of techniques focusing on improving fruit production at its wild condition would affect the species’ development, we planted 216 saplings of various mother trees in an incomplete factorial block design applied in nine treatments. We tested formative aerial pruning (drastic intensity), fertilization (chemical and organic), and the effect of controlled fires prior to planting. We evaluated biomass alterations by systematically measuring the third sapling of each treatment, quantifying fresh and dry matter in two periods. We also measured changes in height (H), root collar diameter (RCD), and the H/RCD ratio. We carried out nine measurements during 27 months and used linear mixed-effects models to consolidate the long-term evaluation. Our results indicate a positive effect from the organic fertilization on the plants’ height, a momentary increase in RCD caused by programmed fires, and an increase in the H/RCD ratio due to formative aerial pruning (increasing resistance). Fertilization did not accelerate the increase in RCD and had no effect on the H/RCD ratio.
