The case study consists of a piled embankment built over a very soft, organic compressible clay layer 10 m deep. The height of the embankment supported on piles was about 1·3 m, and the piles, which measured 0·18 m × 0·18 m, were spaced 2·5 m apart in a square pattern, with 0·8 m wide square pile caps covered with a bidirectional 200 kN/m geogrid polyester reinforcement. A region of the piled supported embankment was instrumented to provide a better understanding of the overall embankment-reinforcement-pile cap system. Three-dimensional and two-dimensional pile layouts were adopted. An excavation of 1 m under the geogrid was carried out to induce rapid load transference to the geogrid. The settlement in between pile caps was 0·10–0·4 m, whereas settlements in the region under similar embankment heights were much higher, thus demonstrating the efficacy of pile-supported embankments with geogrids in controlling settlements. Strains at the reinforcement were also measured, and showed values in the range 0·25–2·05%.
This paper describes the viscous behaviour of St-Roch-de-l'Achigan clay, a Champlain Sea clay from Quebec, Canada. The general geotechnical profile of the soil deposit was first established with static cone penetration tests, vane tests, and some laboratory tests performed at different depths. For the study of the viscous behaviour of the clay, a special laboratory test program was established for specimens taken at depths from 4.8 to 5.8 m. This program included special incremental loading oedometer tests, constant rate of strain (CRS) oedometer tests performed at different strain rates, isotropic and anisotropic triaxial compression tests, and undrained shear tests. All these tests were performed under a constant temperature, varying from 10 to 50°C. The test results show that the vertical yield stresses and the entire limit state curve depend on strain rate and temperature. The critical state line is also temperature dependent in the void ratio (e) -log principal effective stress ( p′) diagram but not in the deviator stress (q) -principal effective stress ( p′) diagram. The results also show that microstructuring may develop when the temperature is high or the strain rate small.Résumé : L'article décrit le comportement visqueux de l'argile de St-Roch-de-l'Achigan, une argile de la mer Champlain, Québec, Canada.
The emission of greenhouse gases (GHG) is a cause for concern when seeking sustainable development in view of global warming. The multiple ecosystem services associated with land use and land cover are at the center of the global climate agenda, both as a mitigation and adaptation strategy to climate change and growing urbanization. Among these services is carbon storage and sequestration (CSS). It can remove GHG carbon from the atmosphere and store it in the form of organic matter, a natural carbon stock. Thus, to design projects that guarantee sustainable development, it is necessary to use metrics that can quantify the impact of sequestration on natural carbon stocks. We aimed to implement the InVEST CSS methodology in the region of Itaperuna-RJ (Brazil) to quantify the net change in carbon storage over time (sequestration and loss) between 2015 and 2020. The obtained total difference in carbon stocks between the analyzed maps was −39,103.56 × 103 kg C, which has an equivalent social cost of carbon of USD 16,559,187.69. This social value represents the social damage caused by releasing that amount of carbon into the atmosphere. This main result brings an important application for validating the InVEST CSS methodology in Brazil. Furthermore, it points out parameters that can help elaborate sustainable development policies.
The current study presents the evaluation of the mechanical behavior of an asphalt mixture using the alternative aggregate boiler coke ash, an element that originates in nickel processing. Hereby, we have focused the research on the runways for military purposes, which marks a great difference to the existing commercial runways in the Western Brazilian Amazon. This area suffers extreme heat, with temperatures oscillating up to 80 °C on the corresponding asphalts. This leads to deformations that are the main aim of the present investigation and the main consideration of fatigue damage. The main property of the alternative aggregate, whose granulometry composes the fine elements of the asphalt mix, is the pozzolanity that acts as a cement in the putty of the mix. Based on our experimental approaches, there is a significant improvement in the results of the tests standardized by DNIT, ABNT and DIRENG, allowing the technical and economic evaluation of the used mixture. Another fundamental aspect is the reduction of the volume of waste disposed of in nickel processing plants in Brazil.
