The objective of this trial was to estimate the upper critical levels of the temperature-humidity index (TUI) measuring morning and afternoon rectal temperature (RT), respiratory rate (RF), and hair coat surface temperature (ST) of ½, ¾ and 7/8Holstein-Zebu (HZ) dairy cows during two consecutive years (two summers and two winters) in Coronel Pacheco, MG, Brazil. Correlation and multiple analysis were determined using data obtained from 15 dairy crossbreed cows/season; five from each genetic group (GG). Results showed that RF was more reliable than RT as an indicator of heat stress based on both correlation and regression analysis. Estimated upper critical values of the TUI were 80, 77, and 75 using RT and 79, 77, and 76 using RF for ½HZ, ¾HZ, and 7/8HZ dairy cows, respectively. When ST was used the estimated upper critical values of the TUI were very similar among the three GG averaging 79. The ½HZ dairy cows were more heat tolerant than those in the 7/8HZ GG while the ¾HZ were intermediate.
Objectives of the research were to examine the effect of bovine somatotropin (bST) on pregnancy rates to a timed artificial insemination protocol and to test a resynchronization system with two consecutive synchronized services. Lactating Holstein cows (n = 403) were assigned to the following treatments: bST treatment (500 mg) was initiated at 63 +/- 3 d postpartum concomitantly with initiation of the timed artificial insemination protocol or bST treatment was initiated at 105 +/- 3 d postpartum. At 63 +/- 3 d postpartum, all cows received GnRH (100 microg), an injection of PGF2alpha (25 mg) 7 d later, and a GnRH injection at 48 h after PGF2alpha and were inseminated 16 to 20 h later. Cows were reinseminated at detected estrus or resynchronized with a GnRH injection at 20 d after insemination. At 27 d after insemination, cows were examined for pregnancy. Resynchronized cows diagnosed nonpregnant received an injection of PGF2alpha and were inseminated at detected estrus or received an injection of GnRH at 48 h after PGF2alpha and inseminated 16 to 20 h later. Cows pregnant at d 27 were reexamined for pregnancy at 45 d after insemination. First-service pregnancy rates at d 45 were increased in cows not resynchronized that initiated bST treatment at 63 +/- 3 d postpartum, compared with cows initiating bST treatment at 105 +/- 3 d postpartum (37.7 +/- 5.8% and 22.1 +/- 4.2%, respectively), but the effect of bST treatment was not observed when cows were resynchronized (25.6 +/- 4.3% and 25.8 +/- 5.5%, respectively). Thus, bST increased pregnancy rates to a timed artificial insemination protocol.
A TSC não apresentou diferença entre as estações (P<0,05).Palavras-chave: bovino, estresse calórico, temperatura retal, freqüência respiratória, temperatura de superfície corporal ABSTRACTThe thermoregulation physiological responses in thermoneutrality and heat stress of crossbred calves (½Gir x ½Holstein), males and females, with age between 14 and 20 months were studied. The animals were submitted to thermoneutrality (22°C and 70% of relative humidity)
Productive and nutritional traits of pasture in an agrosilvopastoral system, according to the distance from treesAbstract -The objectives of this work were to evaluate the effects of trees arranged in rows on yield and nutritional characteristics of Urochloa decumbens and to identify the average distance in which there is a better use of moderate shading in an agrisilvipasture system. The treatments consisted of distances from measure points to tree rows (0, 3, 6, 9, 12 and 15 m) and were distributed in randomized blocks, with four replicates. The tiller density, forage mass, forage accumulation rate and chemical composition of pasture were evaluated. The tiller density, forage mass and rates of forage accumulation increased with the distance from tree rows, reaching the highest values of 392 tillers m -2 , 1,347 kg ha -1 and 30.1 kg ha -1 per day, respectively, at 9.1, 10.4 and 8.8 m of distance. The contents of the neutral detergent fiber did not vary with distance, while the acid detergent fiber and lignin content varied, but without a clear pattern of response. The crude protein contents reduced quadratically with distance from tree rows and had the highest values under trees (9.8%) and the lowest at 13.5 m of distance (6.5%). The site of pasture, between 7 and 10 m of distance from the tree rows showed the highest benefits of moderate shading on pasture traits.
The purpose of this study was to isolate fungi from the quarter milk of cow udders from several dairy herds and to identify the different genera and species involved in mastitis. A total of 2078 milk samples from normal, clinical and subclinical mastitis quarters from 22 dairy herds of 16 districts in the State of São Paulo, Brazil was utilized in this survey. Two hundred and fifty one (12.07%) fungi were isolated from the samples. Two hundred and eight of these (82.86%) were yeasts and 30 (11.95%) were moulds. The fungi were isolated in pure culture (24.77%) or in cultures mixed with bacteria (72.22%). The yeasts isolated were: Cryptococcus spp. (71 strains), Rhodotorula spp. (40), Candida spp. (68), Trichosporon cutaneum (21), Aureobasidium pullulans (7), and Pichia ohmeri (1). Moulds classified in following genera were also isolated: Aspergillus (3), Penicillium (3), Alternaria (3), Phoma (3), Epicoccum (2), and Geotrichum (16).
