This study centers on the premise that entrepreneurship is an embedded process. Although “the entrepreneur” is inherently an “individual,” entrepreneurship can never be fully disembedded from the more general social settings within which any business venture is situated. An Islamic‐based economic discursive framework should be cognizant of the different forms of sociality, spatiality, and community as well as the various norms, codes, and symbols that define society more generally. The work of Karl Polanyi on embeddedness is engaged and juxtaposed with Islam's understanding of the ideal mode of economic discursive practices. Islamic economic models and Polanyi are both critical of the corrosive effects of unbridled capitalism and individualism that ultimately lead to reification and exploitation. The conclusion recommends more small‐N case studies by researchers and entrepreneurial educational materials that emphasize the importance of networks and local embeddedness.
The Emirate of Abu Dhabi heavily relies on seawater desalination for its freshwater needs due to limited available resources. This trend is expected to increase further because of the growing population and economic activity, the rapid decline in limited freshwater reserves, and the aggravating effects of climate change. Seawater desalination in Abu Dhabi is currently done through thermal desalination technologies, such as multi-stage flash (MSF) and multi-effect distillation (MED), coupled with thermal power plants, which is known as co-generation. These thermal desalination methods are together responsible for more than 90% of the desalination capacity in the Emirate. Our analysis indicates that these thermal desalination methods are inefficient regarding energy consumption and harmful to the environment due to CO2 emissions and other dangerous byproducts. The rapid decline in the cost of solar Photovoltaic (PV) systems for energy production and reverse osmosis (RO) technology for desalination makes a combination of these two an ideal option for a sustainable desalination future in the Emirate of Abu Dhabi. A levelized cost of water (LCW) study of a solar PV + RO system indicates that Abu Dhabi is well-positioned to utilize this technological combination for cheap and clean desalination in the coming years. Countries in the Sunbelt region with a limited freshwater capacity similar to Abu Dhabi may also consider the proposed system in this study for sustainable desalination.
This paper develops a theoretical model to analyze whether a rentier state can diversify its economy away from the rent revenue and hence sustain the economic development and preserve the status-quo. Considering the decarbonization process of the global economy and rapidly fall in economic value of hydrocarbons in the face of the supply glut, rentier states depending on oil and gas revenues urgently need to diversify their economies to avoid social backlash and political upheaval. There are three intertwining factors that determine an effective economic diversification away from the rent revenue: The profitability of non-rentier sectors, the size of the domestic economy to induce a “Big Push” for industrialization to non-rentier sectors, and the level of economic inclusivity. For an optimal level of economic diversification in a rentier state: (1) Non-rentier sectors should be attractive to private agents without the entry barriers; (2) domestic economy should be large enough to induce investment into non-rentier sectors; (3) the ruler(s) should have sufficient tolerance (inclusivity) for private agents investing into non-rentier sectors. Our findings indicate that a rentier state can achieve an optimal level of economic diversification provided that the conditions above are met even without any political change.
This paper studies the local perspective on innovation and entrepreneurship in the resource-based state of Qatar. The effective utilization of abundant natural resources (oil and gas) have propelled the country’s rapid economic development over the last four decades. However, accelerating decarbonization efforts of the global energy system due to climate change put the future value of these hydrocarbon resources into doubt and hence the country’s revenue streams from international trade. Rapidly growing the local population adds further pressure to the social welfare system amid dwindling oil and gas revenues for the state. The argument for economic diversification and theoretical foundations of innovation and entrepreneurship in a resource-rich state are discussed. A survey to measure the attitude of the residents in Qatar towards innovation and state-led initiatives is prepared and conducted with people living in the country. The analysis of the survey shows that Qatari residents are relatively risk-averse and state-dependent in their pursuit of new entrepreneurial opportunities. We identify three possible reasons for such an outcome; they are, (1) the country’s unique economic structure (natural resource-based), (2) demographic structure (expatriates vs. citizens), and (3) lack of previous experience in innovation and entrepreneurship (path dependency) in a relatively young country. The country’s spectacular success in the last three decades has become its Achilles-heel in decoupling the current economy away from hydrocarbon dependence.
Anahtar Kelimeler: Yazma becerisi, yazma düzeyleri, yazma sorunları AbstractAmong the basic skills, writing is the latest developing one and as it covers a lot of cognitive process it is a difficult field for people (Evans, 2001: 1). It is observed that students encounter many writing problems in the process; starting firstly with writing and continuing academically in higher education. The aim of this study is to evaluate the problems comparatively based on the teachers' opinions on writing skills that are encountered at primary, secondary and high-school levels. Figured in form of holistic multiple case study, in this research semistructured interviews were made with 20 classroom teachers, 20 Turkish language teachers and 20 literature teachers working in Isparta. The interview records of the teachers were evaluated by using content analysis. According to the findings of the study, it is stated that students at primary, secondary and high-school levels are generally having difficulties in writing, that teachers are not spending enough time for writing lessons at each of the three levels and that their method and technical knowledge is deficient. It is stated that while internet and television negatively affect the writing skills of secondary school and high-school students, the problem is not addressed to primary school students. Once again, it is observed that the cause of writing problems in secondary school and high-school is clarified with not gaining the habit of writing during primary school. The data of the study is important in terms of its revealing the common problems as well as the differen...
